Big Wynn for Wayne Country Day

Wayne Country Day erupted for 29 fourth-quarter points and turned back Harrells Christian 64-54 in a non-conference, varsity boys basketball contest Thursday evening.

Floronta Wynn notched a double-double -- 31 points, 12 rebounds -- as the Chargers improved to 3-2 overall. Kameron Byrd chipped in 12 points, while Lamar Carpenter added seven points and five rebounds.

Ajay Fowler and Shadoe Stewart each provided six points. Kyle Pender scored four.

Wayne Country Day led 27-25 at halftime, but Harrells rallied for a 35-35 tie after three quarters of play. The Chargers, who entertain county archrival Wayne Christian next Tuesday, outscored the Crusaders by 10 in the final period.

Eagles drop

season opener

ROSEBORO -- Holt Rains spearheaded Rosewood's offense with eight points in the Eagles' season-opening, 62-30 loss at Lakewood on Thursday evening.

Joey Boyette added seven points and Stephen McIntyre scored four. Dennis Jones and Josh Myers each contributed three points. Tyler Muntz, Adrian Dahranj and Sean Coleman also scratched in the scoring column.

Rosewood (0-1) returns to action at home Tuesday against Union. Today's contest against Hobbton has been postponed, and a make-up date has not been announced.

WCDS attack

FAYETTEVILLE -- Brandon Davis led three Wayne Country Day players in double figures with 24 points in the Chargers' 49-40 victory over Oakwood Academy on Thursday afternoon.

Teammates Vaughn Eason and Stoan Stewart contributed 10 points apiece in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Wayne Country Day, which improved to 3-0 overall, entertains county rival Wayne Christian on Tuesday.

Rosewood falls

to Leopards

ROSEBORO -- Zack Mangum led a balanced Rosewood scoring attack with 10 points in the Eagles' season-opening, 47-38 loss against Lakewood on Thursday afternoon.

Will Beasley and Terrance Toran tallied eight points apiece.

Rosewood (0-1) entertains Union on Tuesday.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Catherine Ford emerged Wayne Country Day's top scorer with nine points in the Chargers' 28-24 loss at Oakwood Academy on Thursday afternoon.

Jessica Lewis added eight points.

It was the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

The Chargers (1-1) play host to Wayne Christian on Tuesday.

Golden Falcons

notch first win

PIKEVILLE -- Beth Carter pumped in a game-high 14 points as Charles B. Aycock thumped Wilson Fike 41-28 in non-conference action.

Courtney Sheeks and Caroline Schlaeppi dropped in nine and eight points, respectively, for the Golden Falcons.

Adrianne Turnage led Fike with 10 points.

C.B. Aycock (1-2) entertains North Lenoir today. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Middle schools

Norwayne boys d. Rosewood 54-33 -- Tyler Lynch led the Cobras with nine points, while Ra'damez Greene added eight.

It was the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I and season opener for both teams.

Norwayne girls d. Rosewood 28-9 -- Courtnei Gilbert and Leigh Johnson collected six and five points, respectively, for Norwayne. The Cobras (1-0, 1-0 WCMSAC Division I) play host to Mount Olive on Monday. Rosewood (0-1, 0-1 Division I) travels to Brogden the same afternoon.

Dillard girls d. Brogden 44-9 -- Kasheika Wallace poured in a game-high 15 points for the Tigers. Keandra McDaniel provided nine points. Dillard (1-0) entertains Norwayne next Wednesday.

Wayne Country Day boys d. Oakwood 29-21 -- Johnny Gallman paced the Chargers with 11 points. Russell Turner and Hil Tanner contributed seven points apiece in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams. WCDS (1-1) plays host to Wayne Christian on Tuesday.

Dillard boys d. Brogden 71-24 -- All 11 players scratched in the scoring column for the Tigers. Robert Washington led three Dillard players in double figures with 15 points, followed by Devonte White (11) and James Williams (10). Mike Sykes added nine points, while Cortez Sprangle chipped in six points and dished out six assists. Dillard (1-0, 1-0 WCMSAC Division I) entertains Norwayne next Wednesday.
