Norris, Wright lead Wayne Christian girls to tournament title

KINSTON -- Brooke Norris and Hope Wright recorded solid performances and Wayne Christian emerged the Bethel Christian Tip Off Tournament champion with a 57-36 victory over the host school on Friday evening.

Norris seized Most Valuable Player accolades with 12 points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds. Wright, a junior, notched a double-double -- 13 points, 11 rebounds -- and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Katie Daniels contributed nine points, five rebounds and three steals. Michelle Krug and Brittany Sullivan contributed nine points apiece.

Wayne Christian (2-1) opened the Tip Off Tournament with a 54-16 rout of Neuse Baptist-Raleigh. Sullivan paced the Eagles' attack with a game-high 15 points to go along with six assists.

Daniels recorded 14 points, two assists and four rebounds. Norris chipped in 10 points, five steals and four assists. Wright registered eight points and three rebounds.

The Eagles return to action Monday at Arendell-Parrott Academy.

Golden Demons spoil EW opener

Junior Brittanni Billups provided a team-high 17 points in Eastern Wayne's season-opening 48-32 loss against Wilson Fike on Friday evening.

Brianna Virgil and Barksdale Thompson paced the Golden Demons with 18 and 13 points, respectively.

Wilson Fike led 25-11 at halftime.

Eastern Wayne (0-1) plays host to South Central next Tuesday.

WCDS dealt road defeat

ERWIN -- Catherine Ford provided a team-high 10 points in Wayne Country Day's 56-27 loss at Cape Fear Christian.

Amber McCahan added eight points for the Chargers. Ellen Elmore and Kim Martel tallied three points apiece. Danielle Holland and Jessica Lewis chipped in two and one point, respectively.

"The team played exceptionally well and I was real proud of my young squad," said WCDS head coach Toni Ingram.

Eagles finish 1-1 at Bethel

KINSTON -- Eric Williams delivered a double-double and Wayne Christian snapped a two-game skid with a 55-40 victory over Mt. Calvary-Hookerton in the consolation game of the Bethel Christian Tip Off Tournament.

Williams finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and received all-tournament recognition. Adam Brannan, one of four Eagles in double figures, added 13 points. Shea Glasman and Nick Woods contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Wayne Christian (1-2) opened tournament play with a 45-43 loss against Neuse Baptist.

The Eagles trailed 38-29, but went on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 43-43. Neuse Baptist drained two free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Williams posted a double-double -- 21 points, 13 rebounds. Woods (six assists, five steals) and Glasman tallied nine and eight points, respectively. Brannan chipped in five points.

Leg injuries benched senior starters T.A. Brannan and Doug Johnson.

Wayne Christian is the guest of Arendell-Parrott Academy on Monday.

WCDS defeated in final

ERWIN -- Cape Fear Christian drained five 3-pointers in the opening quarter and cruised past Wayne Country Day 78-56 in the championship game of its own tournament Saturday afternoon.

Cape Fear led 25-17 after the first period and 45-28 at halftime.

"We were playing man-to-man defense, not a zone," said first-year WCDS coach Mike Ellis. "It was kind of like a good punch in the face on the first drive of a football game."

Floronta Wynn and Jeff Franklin each posted a double-double for the Chargers. Wynn, a transfer from Eastern Wayne, notched a career-high 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Franklin, still recovering from an ankle injury sustained during soccer season, provided 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Lamar Carpenter pulled down six boards.

Wayne Country Day advanced to the title game with a 68-64 conquest of Lee Christian. Ajay Fowler paced the Chargers with 19 points, while Wynn contributed 16. Kyle Pender knocked down 15.

Wynn and Franklin collected nine and seven rebounds, respectively.

Wayne Country Day (1-1) entertains Terra Ceia on Tuesday.

Princeton picks up road victory

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Junior Josh Barefoot drained two free throws in the final seconds and Princeton escaped Midway 69-68 on Friday evening.

One of four Bulldogs to register double figures, Barefoot finished the contest with 15 points and nine rebounds. He converted 11 of 12 free throw attempts for the game.

Ryan Daughtry paced Princeton with 26 points. Daniel Gerrell added 11, while Will Gainey chipped in 10.

The Bulldogs watched their 13-point lead turn into a slim deficit after the Raiders nailed a 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Barefoot's free throws capped Princeton's 10-for-11 effort at the charity stripe in the second half.

Princeton (2-0) entertains South Johnston on Monday.

Wilson Fike nips E. Wayne

Sophomore guard Jeremy Atkinson drained two free throws with 11.2 seconds remaining and Wilson Fike slipped past Eastern Wayne 60-55 on Friday evening.

Atkinson finished with a game-high 26 points for the Golden Demons.

University of Richmond signee D.J. Cowan led the Warriors with 16 points.

Eastern Wayne trailed 56-55 with 1:27 left in regulation and missed two free throws. Coach Marvin Bowman said his team misfired on three possessions to take the lead before Atkinson's free throws sealed his team's fate.

The Warriors entertain South Central on Tuesday.

Wrestling

Spring Creek pins Princeton

PRINCETON -- Spring Creek opened its 2006 season on the Class 1-A Carolina/Tar-Roanoke/Albemarle Conference wrestling season with a 45-33 victory over Princeton.

Seven Gators recorded pins -- Daniel Richter, Trey Mills, Paul Richter, Ross Montifia, Josh Rodriguez, Curtis Boseman and Joey Combs.

"I'm looking forward to us having a win season," said Spring Creek head coach Dwight Glenn. "We have a bunch of young wrestlers, but I figure we will do well."

Spring Creek (1-0, 1-0 C/TRC/A) is the guest of North Johnston next Tuesday.

Clayton rolls past C.B. Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Kyle LaFlamme tallied a team-high 11 points in Charles B. Aycock's 59-39, season-opening loss against Clayton.

LaFlamme also pulled down nine rebounds.

C.B. Aycock (0-1) travels to Greene Central next Tuesday.
