Brewer, Ivey claim Walnut Creek Club championships

Bill Brewer and Jewel Ivey overcame slick greens and cool conditions to win the Walnut Creek Country Club Club Championship this past weekend in their respective divisions.

Brewer captured the overall Men's title and Ivey captured the overall Ladies title.

Jello Hallow won the senior division and Frank Raper won the super senior division. Below are the winners in their respective divisions and flights:

Grolle shoots

first-ever ace

George Grolle, an avid golfer, carded his first-ever hole-in-one Thursday afternoon at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. The 71-year-old Grolle used a 9-wood to ace the 149-yard, par 3 No. 16 hole.

His wife, Madge, witnessed the feat.

Middle schools

Spring Creek soccer 3, Greenwood 1 -- Nelbin Velasquez tallied two goals for the Gators, who claimed a share of the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II championship. Edgar Rangel provided one goal. Spring Creek concluded the year 8-4 overall.
