Goldsboro JVs hammer North Pitt; Young paces Golden Falcons

BETHEL -- Dustin Uzzardo threw two touchdown passes and A.J. Parker eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season in Goldsboro's 44-6 thrashing of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Pitt.

Uzzardo completed 10 of 16 passes for 152 yards and concluded the year with 1,207 yards passing. Uzzardo threw scoring strikes to Parker (16 yards) and Enrique Moses (54 yards).

Tyquan Sprangle, Darren Pittman and Moses each rushed for a touchdown in the season-ending win. Parker finished with 111 yards rushing on just 12 carries and boosted his season total to 1,097 yards.

Parker, Harris, Hyonte Atkinson, Tyre Vaughn, Antwon Pope, Josh McCoy, Marquis Dance and Pittman emerged the defensive leaders.

Goldsboro concluded the year 9-1 overall, including a 4-1 worksheet against EPC opposition.

PIKEVILLE -- Dominique Young saved his best for last Thursday evening.

Young rushed for a season-high 337 yards and four touchdowns in Charles B. Aycock's season-ending, 40-26 victory over county and Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Southern Wayne.

Aycock's Justin Ivers and Tyheim Pitt combined for 53 yards rushing and one touchdown. The Golden Falcons rushed for 392 yards overall and amassed 402 yards of total offense in the shootout win at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Quarterback David Gurganus had 10 yards passing.

Dusty Wooten led the Golden Falcon defense with two interceptions.

Corey Baker paced Southern Wayne's offense with 78 yards rushing, including a 44-yard touchdown run. Jabari Dos Santos, Marcus Grantham, Creston Williams and Eric Hinton combined for 80 yards rushing.

Dos Santos returned kickoffs of 83 and 82 yards for touchdowns.

Juan Segura emerged the Saints' defensive leader with 10 tackles. Terrell Richardson contributed seven tackles and two sacks. Baker and Graham each posted seven tackles, while Segura picked off a Gurganus pass.

Southern Wayne began the week with a home loss against Wilson Hunt on Monday. Baker and Dos Santos each scored a touchdown. Graham led the defense with 10 tackles. Derek Whitman, Richardson and Javonni Robinson each had five tackles.

The Saints ended the season 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the ECC.

Betty Jean Gurley captured game-of-the-week and tied with Nan Jarrell for low-net honors in weekly play at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Gurley also emerged the low-putt winner.

Middle schools

Eastern Wayne soccer d. Norwayne 1-0 (OT) -- Joseph Chaney tallied the game's lone goal in the first sudden-death overtime, giving Eastern Wayne the outright Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference championship. The Warriors improved to 11-0-2 overall and 6-0-2 against division opposition. Norwayne (10-1-2) dipped to 5-1-2 in WCMSAC play.

Norwayne football d. Eastern Wayne 20-18 -- Damian Reed caught the game-clinching, two-point conversion pass from Tyler Farmer and the Cobras spoiled the Warriors' bid for an unbeaten season Thursday afternoon. Willie Sutton and Chris Murchinson combined for three rushing touchdowns, while Farmer threw for 100 yards. Jarad James, Ra'damez Greene, Joey Skelton, Caleb Scott, Antonio Applewhite and Shepherd Whitfield played well on defense. Norwayne ended up 6-2 overall and finished behind Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I co-champions Eastern Wayne (7-1) and Dillard (7-1).

Rosewood volleyball d. Spring Creek 23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-14 -- Rebecca Fail, Jenna Aycock, Heather Silvani, Kristen Lynn, Rachael Kornegay, Chelsea Sawkiw, Haley Howell, Kerri Jo Gurley and Kayla Ormond each served well in the Eagles' win. Rosewood finished the year 13-3 overall.

Dillard football d. Grantham 34-14 -- Freddie Jones scored touchdowns on runs of 40 and 50 yards for the T-Birds. Deontae Lender added a 40-yard touchdown run. Michael Sawyer provided 40-yard touchdown run. Coreteiz Sprangle threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Michael Sykes. Dillard finished the year 7-1 overall and earned a share of the WCMSAC Division I title with Eastern Wayne.

Brogden football d. Greenwood 24-16 -- D.J. Morrison rushed for two touchdowns and J.D. Lofton threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Quintin Smith in the Rams' regular-season finale. Lofton rushed for 108 yards, while Rico Rich added 77 yards on the ground. Jyhkia Applewhite led the Brogden defense with eight solo tackles. Rich had five solo stops and one fumble recovery. Morrison and Bryan Rhoades each recorded five tackles. Brogden posted a 6-2 record overall, including a 2-2 worksheet in WCMSAC Division I play.
