Area teams ready to take next step

Charles B. Aycock continues defense of its eastern women's dual-team tennis eastern regional title today, while six area men's soccer teams begin playoff action later this week.

The Golden Falcons play host to county rival Eastern Wayne this afternoon at the John Neal Walker Tennis Complex in Mount Olive. Aycock swept the regular-season series. Singles play is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association men's soccer playoffs kick off in all four classifications on Wednesday.

Aycock, which is 17-2-1 overall and the two-time Eastern Carolina Conference champion, entertains wild-card entry Bartlett-Yancey at 6 p.m. The Golden Falcons, led by the high-scoring tandem of Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Delgado, carry a six-match win streak into the contest.

Eastern Wayne, a longtime fixture in the postseason, is the guest of South Central. The Warriors (8-10-2) won both meetings during the regular season. Game time is 7 p.m.

Spring Creek (12-2) emerged the Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference co-champion and earned its first-ever home playoff game. The Gators welcome Raleigh Charter to "The Swamp" for a 6:30 p.m. encounter.

Fellow C/T-RC member Rosewood (8-8-1) is the guest of N.C. School of Science and Math.

Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rivals Greene Central and North Lenoir each drew an opening-round home match against wild-card entries. The Rams (8-10) face East Duplin, while the Hawks (10-8-2) take on Croatan.

Regular-season play ends this week for high school football. The NCHSAA, once it breaks down the average daily membership (ADM) for each classification, is expected to release the pairings early Saturday afternoon.
