WILSON -- Wayne Country Day scored four unanswered goals in the second half as the Chargers advanced to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state finals Saturday night with a 4-1 triumph over Gaston Day.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Chargers (15-4-1) took the lead for good after Sam Steed knocked home a pair of penalty kicks. Brandon Davis and David Wilson added goals later in the second half as Wayne Country Day advanced to today's 3 p.m. final against Trinity Academy at the Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.

"It's very exciting," Wayne Country Day coach Paul Estrada said. "It's great to be in the finals, and I hope we can bring a title home to Wayne County."

Chargers goalie Ryan Ford made several big stops in the match as Steed and Joesph Cha had second-half assists.

On a windy afternoon, Estrada said the weather played a big factor in this one.

"In the first half, we were playing against the wind, and it felt like we were playing uphill," he said. "All we were trying to do is hold them so we could run on them in the second half -- which is what we did. (Gaston Day) seemed to give it their all in the first half, and they wore down in the second half."
