H.S. Football: Ayden-Grifton too much for Princeton

LITTLEFIELD -- Four running backs combined for nearly 300 yards rushing as Ayden-Grifton shut out Princeton 36-0 on a miserable, rainy Friday evening.

The Chargers (7-3) improved to 3-1 in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play and conclude the regular season Friday at defending league champion North Johnston. The Panthers (6-3) put their unblemished conference mark (3-0) on the line Monday at Spring Creek.

The Dawgs (2-8) remained winless in four Carolina outings and entertain archrival Rosewood on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Fred Bartholomew Athletic Complex.

"They're pretty good; decent club with good athletes," said Princeton coach Russell Williamson. "She (the rain) really didn't get cranked up until the second half. I don't even have a film to get anything off it.

"Our camera quit."

Ayden-Grifton's Perseus Williams opened the scoring with a 44-yard jaunt midway through the first quarter. Quarterback Matt Dougherty accounted for two second-quarter touchdowns -- a 1-yard plunge and a 14-yard scoring strike to Zack Pipkin.

J.D. Strickland finished off the Chargers' 24-point, second-quarter outburst with a 14-yard run. Williams added a 4-yard run early in the fourth period.

The Chargers, led by Strickland and Josh Hunter, collected 283 yards rushing on 39 carries. Strickland and Hunter combined for 101 yards, while Williams emerged the top ball carrier with 149 yards on just 10 totes.

Princeton finished with minus-14 yards of total offense in the first half. The Dawgs nearly spoiled the Chargers' shutout when Gerrell Bogle busted loose for an 81-yard gain. Jarvis Murphy stopped Bogle at the 15-yard line.

Williamson's team ran three offensive plays and moved to the Chargers' 1-yard line. However, time expired and Ayden-Grifton had posted its third shutout of the season.

The Dawgs endured their 18th consecutive league defeat.

"It's all right. We're going to get better," said Williamson.
