Charles B. Aycock senior Kelli Forbis birdied the first hole in a sudden-death playoff and emerged the N.C. High School Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A/3-A eastern regional women's golf champion Tuesday afternoon.
Forbis and Wilson Fike's Amy Otteson, the 2005 regional medalist, tied at 11-over par 82 on a blustery and chilly day at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. Forbis calmly drained her putt on the par-5, hole No. 1 to become Aycock's first-ever women's regional champion in school history.
Senior Brooke Newell carded an 89 and finished fifth overall. The Golden Falcons settled for team runner-up honors behind Fike, which prevailed 165-171 and successfully defended its regional championship.
Aycock, Fike, Topsail (178) and Eastern Wayne (188) will send teams to next week's two-day state tournament near Lillington. Jasmine Reeves' 91 paced the Warriors, while teammates Erica Freeman and Melissa Ricker provided 18-hole rounds of 97 and 102, respectively.
Southern Wayne's Jordan Hill (98) and Spring Creek's Paula Webber (98) also qualified to participate on the state level.
