Bennett, Schlaeppi (Caroline) dominate ECC 3-A XC Championships

Southern Wayne's Allen Bennett and Charles B. Aycock's Caroline Schlaeppi garnered runner of the year honors in Tuesday's season-ending Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference Cross Country Championships contested at Waynesborough Park.

Bennett posted a meet-winning time of 18 minutes, 48 seconds on the hilly and twisting 3.1-mile course. He led the Saints to a runner-up finish behind Wilson Hunt in team competition.

Aycock's Nik Fredrick ended up third in 18:54, followed by Southern Wayne's Steven Henricks (19:31) and Wilson Beddingfield's Dalton Ford (19:31).

The Golden Falcons' Daniel Pennington collected eighth place. Eastern Wayne's Chris Tesar and the Saints' Dean Grady crossed the finish line in ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Schlaeppi dominated the girls' portion of the race with a time of 23:25 and beat Eastern Wayne's Kelly Gregorcyk by 30 seconds. Hunt's Skylar Zee was third, followed by Aycock's Megan Hales and Eastern Wayne's Sarah Schley.

Hunt emerged the team champion.

The top seven finishers in each race earned all-conference honors. The runners who filled out the 8-10 spots garnered all-ECC honorable mention recognition.

All the ECC teams return to action Saturday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Eastern Regional at Nash Central. The boys' event begins at 10 a.m. with the girls following approximately one hour later.
