Trojan women begin CVAC title quest Tuesday

The Mount Olive College women's soccer team is assured of finishing its season at Trojan Field. The Trojans are hoping their season finale is still three matches away.

No. 3 seed Mount Olive plays host to No. 6 seed Barton Tuesday in the first round of the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics conference Women's Soccer Tournament. Match time is 2 p.m. at Trojan Field.

The winners of Tuesday's four first-round matches advance to the semifinals Friday at Trojan Field. Mount Olive is the host for the CVAC Women's and Men's Soccer Tournament "final four."

Mount Olive (14-6-0 overall, 9-2-0 CVAC) finished the regular season tied with Pfeiffer for third in the CVAC standings. The Trojans earned the tie-breaker advantage by virtue of their 3-2 overtime win at Pfeiffer last month.

Mount Olive enters the tournament on a three-match winning streak after defeating Erskine 2-0 Saturday in the Trojans' regular season finale. Emily Escolas and Kirsten White each scored goals on corner kicks as Mount Olive won for the 10th time in its last 12 matches.

White, a freshman defender from Woodstock, Ontario, is tied with fellow Canadian Kate Painter for second on the team with 11 goals. Sophomore Lyndsay Brennan leads the team with 12 goals.

Junior midfielder April Jacobs ranks third in the nation in assists per game and second in total assists. Jacobs notched her 16th assist of the season Saturday. Junior sweeper Caitlyn Wright added her 10th assist of the season and fifth in her last five matches.

Barton (9-7-0, 5-6-0) fell to Lees-McRae 2-0 Saturday at Wilson. The loss was the Bulldogs' third in a row.
