Wayne Christian's Johnson tabbed CCC runner of the year

SMITHFIELD -- Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson earned Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference runner of the year honors, and Jennifer Price drew all-conference recognition in Friday's season-ending meet at Johnston Christian.

Johnson finished fifth overall in the boys' race with a time of 19 minutes, 43 seconds. Teammate Justin Brathwaite also received all-CCC honors with an eighth-place effort of 20:40.

Jon Massey and Noah Kearney ended up 15th and 16th, respectively. Anthony Mulligan rounded out the Eagles' team scoring with a 23rd-place showing.

Price settled for runner-up honors in the girls' portion of the 3.1-mile race. She ran a 23:27 just 24 hours after claiming the Wayne County Cross Country individual title on Thursday afternoon.

Charity Wright took fifth in 25:03. Martha Summerlin crossed the line in 26:53 and also garnered all-CCC recognition.

Durham Cresset Christian won both team titles.

ousts Conquerors

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian settled for N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A regional runner-up honors after a 25-12, 25-13, 25-17 loss against Berean Christian on Friday evening.

Katlyn Floars led the Conquerors with five kills, six digs and one ace. Alyssa Hill provided three digs, five kills and one ace. Heather Crumpler contributed three digs, three kiss and nine assists.

Brooke Anderson recorded four digs and three kills. Renee Provencal chipped in two digs, one kill and five assists. Summer Honeycutt added three kills.

Seniors Amy Hill and Darlene Tolbert played their final match for Faith Christian.

"They'll be greatly missed," said Conquerors coach Jamie Conlon of her two seniors. "We did not play our best tonight, but we're gradually getting past our rebuilding years."

Faith Christian concluded the year 9-6.

Southern Wayne

endures 4-set loss

SHALLOTTE -- Bridget Parvin provided a season-high 18 kills, but West Brunswick denied Southern Wayne's upset bid 23-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-21 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs on Saturday.

The Saints played passive late in game two and let two game-point opportunities slip away. They fell behind by 10 points in game four and pulled within three, but the Trojans held on for the win.

"If we hadn't dug such a big hole, we could have won that game," said first-year Southern Wayne coach Colby Mangum.

Charlie Garten posted a double-double -- 15 kills, 16 digs -- for the Saints, who received a wild-card invitation to the 64-team tournament.

Rachel Reynolds contributed 18 digs and Sam O'tellio handed out 41 assists.

Lindsay Pearsall collected three of Southern Wayne's nine service aces.

The Saints ended the year 3-8.

Golden Falcons

fall at D.H. Conley

HOLLYWOOD -- Charles B. Aycock ended its volleyball season with a 25-9, 25-16, 25-21 loss against D.H. Conley in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A playoffs on Saturday morning.

The Golden Falcons concluded the year 12-7.

"After the first game, we played the best we have played all year," said Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "My girls did not quit. We covered the court well, but they were just a little too strong."

Jazzmine Lee paced Aycock with eight kills. LeeAnn Sager filled in for an injured Amy Fryt and provided seven kills. Julia Lancaster served four aces.

Fryt injured her knee in practice Thursday and is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday.

Conley is the reigning eastern regional champion.

Pender ousts

Rebels in 1-A play

BURGAW -- Perennial power Pender County collected its 22nd win of the season with a 25-9, 25-17, 25-8 conquest of North Duplin in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs Saturday.

Heather Hudson led the Rebels with seven kills and one ace. Brittany Carr provided 10 digs on defense, while Julie Ivey collected six digs.

Vanessa Lynch and Sam Cates combined for 10 assists.

North Duplin concluded its season 9-8 overall.

Kerr-Vance

takes CPIC title

HENDERSON -- Senior Cameron Musgrove and sophomore Mary Hannah Ross turned in solid net performances as Kerr-Vance swept Wayne Country Day 25-14, 25-11, 25-13 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference championship match Friday.

Musgrove and Ross combined for 31 kills in two matches as the top-seeded Spartans seized the league's automatic bid for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs. The pairings for the 12-team tournament will be announced today.

The Chargers defeated Faith Christian-Rocky Mount in the semifinals.

suffers road loss

ROCKY MOUNT -- Matt Davis scored Wayne Christian's lone goal, but Faith Christian-Rocky Mount seized a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs Friday afternoon.

Davis broke a scoreless tie in the 10th minute.

Fifth-seeded Faith Christian (11-5-1) answered with a goal 10 minutes into the second half, and notched the game-winner in the 75th minute.

"Their last goal deflected off three different defenders before it went into the goal ... a trash goal," said Wayne Christian coach Darryl Anderson. "We played a very good game. Keeper Eric Williams played an excellent game in the goal and our defense played a good game."

Senior Patrick Kornegay played his final game for the Eagles.

"We're looking forward to a good season next year," said Anderson.

Faith Christian travels to Trinity Christian of Raleigh, which earned the automatic bid from the Carolina Christian Conference, next Tuesday.

Wayne Christian finished the season 8-11-1.

Rams' Horton-Sugg

finish runner-up

DURHAM -- Greene Central's doubles team of Brittany Horton-Abby Sugg finished third overall on the final day of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A Mideastern Regional at Rock Quarry Park.

Horton-Sugg lost to Tarboro's Jasmine Burroughs-Miranda Spain in the semifinals, but rebounded to beat Cardinal Gibbons' Fiona Steer-Catherine Norris 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the third-place match.

Horton-Sugg qualified for next weekend's individual state tournament along with Cally Hudson.

Hudson ended up fourth in singles competition after a pair of losses.

Greene Central (13-6) travels to Cardinal Gibbons in the second round of the NCHSAA dual-team playoffs on Tuesday.

The tandem of Bill Thompson-Bill Reeves emerged the top team during the October tournament contested on the Pamlico River. Oscar Johnson-Larry Hoch ended up second, while John Edwards-Bill Rex ended up third.

Thompson had the big fish of the tournament and Bill Rex recaptured first place in the points standings with his third-place finish.

The next tournament will be on the Roanoke River on Nov. 18. Anyone interested in more information about the Hawg Breath Bass Club should telephone John Edwards at 778-0165.

Middle schools

Dillard football 46, Rosewood 6 -- Freddie Jones rushed for touchdowns on runs of 30, 40, 40 and 20 yards. Deonte Lender added a 20-yard TD run. Cortez Sprangle tossed 20-yard touchdown strikes to Mike Sykes and Mike Sawyer. Dillard (5-1) improved to 3-1 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I foes and visits Greenwood next Thursday.

Brogden football 18, Mount Olive 12 (OT) -- D.J. Morrison tallied the game-winning touchdown in overtime for the Rams. Morrison finished with two touchdowns and Quintin Smith hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass from Jyhkia Applewhite. Applewhite led Brogden's defense with seven solo tackles and he picked off two Mount Olive passes. Ray Teachey had six solo stops. Bryan Rhodes and Antonio Deans each posted five solo tackles. Brogden (5-1, 2-1 WCMSAC Division I) is the guest of Eastern Wayne next Thursday.
