Second-half turnovers haunt Eastern Wayne

WILSON -- Two second-half turnovers proved costly, and Wilson Beddingfield capitalized on its guests' graciousness in a come-from-behind 21-19 victory over Eastern Wayne on Friday evening.

The Bruins (4-5) continued their late-season surge and moved into a second-place tie with Charles B. Aycock at 2-1 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference standings. Eastern Wayne, victimized by four lost fumbles, endured its second straight ECC defeat in three tries and exited 5-4 overall.

"The defense played well," said Warriors coach Jeff Price. "I can't say enough about what our defense has done the last two weeks against the Wilson schools."

Kendrick Best returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Nolan Lancaster picked off a Bruin pass and returned it 28 yards for a score in the fourth quarter. That gave Eastern Wayne a 19-9 advantage.

Beddingfield pulled within 19-15 on a 49-yard touchdown pass.

The Warriors committed their fourth fumble on their 1-yard line and quarterback Lance Price scored to cap the Bruins' second straight comeback in as many weeks.

Darius Canida led the Eastern Wayne defense with nine tackles. Adrian Black posted seven solo stops and three assists. Lancaster contributed four tackles and five assists. Anthony Williams contributed four solo tackles, four assists and one sack.

Eastern Wayne entertains C.B. Aycock next Friday.
