Rosewood, coupled with Princeton's loss, still in hunt for Carolina supremacy

CALYPSO -- Rosewood remained in the hunt for the Class 1-A Carolina Conference regular-season title chase with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 victory over North Duplin on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles (16-3 overall) improved to 7-2 in the league and moved to within one game of league leader and archrival Princeton. The Bulldogs, who travel to Rosewood on Thursday, suffered a five-set loss against Ayden-Grifton and failed to clinch the title outright.

Ashley Williams led Rosewood's attack with two aces, 10 kills and three blocks. Courtney Hill contributed four aces, five kills and five digs. Kasie Braswell chipped in six kills and four digs.

Aubrey Reinhard dished out 14 assists and served three aces. Jennifer Hall handed out seven assists.

Rosewood has won 41 of its last 45 matches.

Heather Hudson paced the Rebels with six kills, one ace and five digs. Brittany Carr posted two kills, one ace, four digs and one block. Julie Ivey recorded one kill, two aces and four digs.

Vanessa Lynch (six assists, three aces) and Casey Pate (two kills, five aces, six digs) also contributed to the match.

North Duplin (8-6, 3-6 Carolina) concludes regular-season play Thursday at archrival Spring Creek.

Princeton dealt

five-set defeat

PRINCETON -- Ayden-Grifton seized the first two sets against Princeton and held on for a 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 15-13 upset on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers (6-9 overall) gained sole possession of third place in the conference at 4-5, and dealt the Bulldogs their first defeat in nine league outings this season. Princeton fell to 16-3 overall and concludes regular-season play Thursday at Rosewood.

Sarah Gibbs played solid for the Dawgs with five kills, two digs and eight blocks. Stephanie Daughtry provided two aces, 12 kills, three digs and one block.

Cynthia Peedin contributed two aces, nine kills, two digs and five blocks. Kortnie Yutzy added two aces, six kills, seven digs and one block.

Brittany Davis dished out 33 assists and recorded eight digs defensively.

Saints collect

ECC 3-A win

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne climbed back into the playoff chase with a 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 victory over Wilson Hunt in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints (3-6 overall) moved into a fourth-place tie with the Warriors at 3-6. Southern Wayne concludes regular-season play Thursday at C.B. Aycock, while Hunt opposes defending league champion Wilson Beddingfield.

The top four teams qualify for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Oct. 21.

Additional details on the match were not available at press time.

Conquerors fall

in NCCSA 2-A play

Faith Christian's Renee Provencal and Heather Crumpler each handed out seven assists, but Berean Christian prevailed 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 in N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A Region play Tuesday.

"The girls played very well (and) we had great effort," said Faith Christian coach Jamie Conlon. "We told the girls that tonight's match would come down to which team made more mistakes and, unfortunately, we made more mistakes."

The Conquerors (6-4 overall) suffered their second Coastal region defeat in eight contests. They continue play Thursday at Trinity Christian-Greenville.

Katlyn Floars recorded six kills in the three-set encounter. Brooke Anderson delivered four digs, five kills and one service ace. Alyssa Hill registered five kills, two blocks and one ace.

Senior Darlene Tolbert chipped in five digs and one ace.

Hawks soar

past Goldsboro

North Lenoir continued its quest for an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season title -- its fifth in the last six seasons -- with a 25-13, 25-10, 25-13 triumph over Goldsboro on Tuesday.

The Hawks (15-3) remained tied atop the EPC with defending champion Farmville Central at 8-1. North Lenoir concludes regular-season play at home Thursday against Greene Central.

Brittany Sanders pounded out a match-high 11 kills, while Marisa Lanier added eight. Brittany McPhail collected four kills.

North Lenoir scored 17 and nine points, respectively, with Sanders and Kayla Sutton on serve.

Greene Central

falls to Jaguars

FARMVILLE -- Greene Central's Brianna Stanton provided eight kills, but Farmville Central remained tied for first in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 win Tuesday afternoon.

Blair Carraway served two aces for the Rams.

Greene Central (7-9 overall) fell to 5-4 in the EPC.

North Johnston

upends S. Creek

KENLY -- North Johnston improved to 3-6 against Carolina 1-A Conference opposition with a 12-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-13 victory over Spring Creek.

Tasha Whitfield collected two aces, nine kills and one block. Brandi Simpkins complemented Whitfield's effort with seven kills.

Brooke Albertson handed out a team-high nine assists, while Ashley Barwick contributed two aces and seven assists. Kristin Smith had one ace, one assist and three kills.

Shaquita Brooks provided two kills and one block.

Spring Creek (4-10, 2-7 Carolina) entertain archrival North Duplin on Thursday.

Chargers forge

CPIC 1-A tie

Wayne Country Day played two men down the final 50 minutes of regulation and overtime combined, but managed to salvage a 1-1 draw against Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Tuesday afternoon.

Ranked No. 2 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A poll, the Chargers are 12-3-1 overall.

"Although I'm not happy with how we got into our predicament, I am happy that my boys had the character and heart to pull off the tie with great defense and smart possession of the ball," said WCDS coach Paul Estrada.

Despite missing some offensive punch and misfiring on a penalty kick, the Chargers ripped 22 shots on goal. Joseph Cha notched WCDS' lone goal in the 100-minute battle.

Wayne Country Day is 4-2-1 against Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opposition and travels to Greenfield on Thursday.

Rams collect

close EPC win

SNOW HILL -- Hugo Trejo recorded the hat trick (three goals) in Greene Central's 4-3 victory over Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Lenoir.

Jonathan Reyna added a goal for the Rams, who improved to 6-7 overall and 3-1 against EPC opposition. Ricardo Sanchez provided one assist.

Rams keeper Ivan Martinez recorded five saves.

Cameron Beamon converted a second-half penalty kick for the Hawks, who slipped to 2-2 in the league and 6-7-2 overall. Ricky Jarman and Tyler Smith each added a goal, while C.C. Croom delivered one assist.

Greene Central plays host to Farmville Central today.

edge Wilson Hunt

WILSON -- Natalie Taylor and Sarah Ricker each recorded personal-best times, and Kelly Gregorcyk turned in a key sixth-place time as Eastern Wayne escaped Wilson Hunt 28-29 on Tuesday afternoon.

Taylor ran the 3.1-mile course on Wilson Beddingfield's campus in a meet-winning time of 22 minutes, 7 seconds. Ricker finished second in 22:25, while Gregorcyk crossed the line in 22:06.

Sarah Schley helped the Warriors' cause with a seventh-place effort of 23:56.

On the boys' side, every Eastern Wayne runner turned in a personal-best time on a sun-splashed, warm afternoon. Steven Henricks emerged the meet's top performer with a time of 17:24.

Hunt's Bobby White and Michael Prafta claimed second and third, respectively. Beddingfield's Michael Anderson and Dalton Ford took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Eastern Wayne's duo of Dustin Rhodes (19:27) and Tyler Thornton (19:42) rounded out the top seven spots.

RALEIGH -- Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson and Jennifer Price each emerged victorious during a non-conference dual meet Tuesday afternoon at Wake Christian.

Johnson covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:44. Teammates Justin Brathwaite and Jon Massey ended up third and fifth, respectively. Noah Kearney and Josiah Wright finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Wayne Christian won the meet 22-33.

Price posted a time of 22:30. Teammates Martha Summerlin and Charity Wright were third and sixth overall. Shelle Anderson and Katie Austin ended up seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Eagles prevailed 25-30.

Wayne Christian travels to Eastern Wayne on Oct. 17.

Golden Falcons

lead ECC race

Charles B. Aycock continued its dominance at the top of the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference on Monday at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Keyed by medalist Kelli Forbis, who shot a 40, and teammate Brooke Newell (49), the Golden Falcons finished with a team score of 89. Aycock now owns a 61-shot lead over second-place Eastern Wayne heading into the final ECC match next Monday at Goldsboro Municipal.

The Warriors finished with a 101 as Jasmine Reeves (45) and Melissa Ricker (56) paced Eastern Wayne. Southern Wayne finished third at 106 behind the efforts of Jordan Hill (52) and Taylor Scott (54).

Wilson Beddingfield (113) and Wilson Hunt (117) rounded out the team scoring.

Moberg leads MOC

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Kristin Moberg shot her second consecutive 81 and tied for 26th out of 93 golfers as Mount Olive finished 15th at the Lenoir-Rhyne/Myrtle Beach Women's Golf Intercollegiate at Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Trojans carded a two-round total of 353-346--699 in the 18-team tournament, which concluded Tuesday.

Moberg, a freshman from Gavel, Sweden, finished with a 162 and carded the Trojans' low score for the third consecutive tournament. Kristen Freeman, who shot a personal best in Monday's first round, tied for 42nd with an 82-86--168. Deborah Woodrum (92-90--182) finished 73rd, while Kate Somek (98-89--187) placed 78th.

First-round leader Nova Southeastern went on to post a 304-305--609 and win by 18 strokes. Nova Southeastern had the individual first- and second-place finishers. The low individual 36-hole total was a 2-over-par 146.

The tournament concludes the Trojan women's golf fall season. Mount Olive will resume play in the spring semester.

Christie Phillips added four kills, while Caroline Tart served three aces.

Sam Cates led North Duplin's attack with five kills, three assists and one ace. Felicia Lynch added three kills, two assists, two aces and two digs.

Vanessa Lynch contributed one kill, six assists and three aces. Casey Pate chipped in two kills, five aces and six digs.

Rosewood (11-5, 8-1 Carolina) plays host to Princeton on Thursday.

rallies past CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Eastern Wayne rallied from a four-point deficit in the second set and handed C.B. Aycock a 25-15, 26-24 loss in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Golden Falcons head coach Sandra Overby said that Victoria Benton "gave a lot of effort" during the two-set loss.

C.B. Aycock (7-7, 5-4 ECC) concludes regular-season play at home Thursday against Southern Wayne.

FARMVILLE -- Jennifer Jones emerged Greene Central's top server in a 25-13, 25-15 loss against Farmville Central on Tuesday afternoon.
