Rosewood tennis team wins again

MOUNT OLIVE -- Rosewood completed Class 1-A Carolina/Tar Roanoke Conference play unbeaten after cruising to a 6-0 win over North Duplin on Monday at the Mount Olive College courts.

The Eagles (12-2 overall) finished with a 12-0 record against league foes and will open up the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs on Oct. 17.

Sidney Worrell, Missy Bailey, Jamie Andrews, Erica Nichols, Jillian Casey and Karli Beasley claimed singles wins for Rosewood. Doubles matches were not contested.

The individual conference tournament begins today at Herman Park.

Warriors drop

New Bern

Eastern Wayne finished regular season play with a 5-1 triumph over New Bern on Monday in non-conference action.

Lauren Bynum, Mollie Musgrave, Lindsey Frederick, Nicole Fine and Elizabeth Borden claimed singles wins for the Warriors, who will open up the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs on Oct. 17.

The doubles contests between the Bears and Warriors were rained out with EW leading all three matches.

The Eastern Carolina Conference individual tournament will be held Wednesday in Snow Hill.

SNOW HILL -- The Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference tournament was rained out on Monday. Play will resume today at 3 p.m. at the Greene Central High School Tennis Complex.

Tarboro's Jasmine Burroughs and Miranda Spain are seeded No. 1 in doubles, while Greene Central's Sarah Beth Carraway is the No. 1 seed in singles.

The finals have been tentatively scheduled for Thursday.

Falcons maintain

ECC lead

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock erupted for four goals in 10 minutes during the second half of action on its way to a 5-1 win over Kinston on Monday in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action.

The win improves the Golden Falcons (12-2-1 overall) to 6-1 as they stand alone in first-place in ECC play heading into Wednesday's contest at second-place Wilson Hunt. The Vikings (5-10-1 overall) slipped to 2-5 in the league.

Jorge Delgado, Alex Rodriguez, Rich Holder and Andrew Musselman added one goal each for Aycock during the second-half outburst. Carson Sasser had two assists for the Falcons, while Marcos Contreras and Delgado dished out one assist each.

Rodriguez opened the scoring in the first half on a penalty kick before Kinston answered with a penalty kick goal to make the score 1-1 at halftime.

Jared Kennedy finished with three saves in goal for Aycock, which outshot the visitors 28-8.

Eagles blank

Neuse Baptist

Wayne Christian advanced to the second round of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament with a 3-0 win over Neuse Baptist on Saturday.

The top-seeded Eagles (7-3-1) hosted No. 2 Cresset Christian on Monday but the result of the match was unavailable at press time.

Matt Davis, Eric Williams and Shea Glaesman scored one goal each for WCS, while Andrew Radford and Matt Rouse were applauded for solid defensive play.

Saints battle

in home loss

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Carlos Zometta tallied the Saints' lone goal in a 2-1 loss at home to Wilson Beddingfield on Monday in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action.

Southern Wayne (0-9, 0-7 ECC) got on the board in the first half when Bertin Gonzalez's corner kick was headed in by Zometta. But Beddingfield (13-4-1, 5-2) answered with goals by Omar Picos and Jaime Orellana to remain in second place in the league -- one game behind Charles B. Aycock.

Adiel Nunez stopped 11 shots for the Saints, who travel to Kinston on Wednesday.

RHS suffers

LOUISBURG -- Rosewood pulled within 4-3 early in the second half on the second-of-two penalty kick goals by Elliott Lee, but Louisburg answered and claimed a 6-5 win over the Eagles on Monday.

David Sass scored twice for Rosewood (6-6-1 overall), which dropped to 1-3 in Class 1-A Carolina/Tar Roanoke Conference play. Conner Adams added one goal for the Eagles, while Taylor Allen, Cameron Lowe and Luis Hernandez dished out one assist.

Leo Verceles and Will Grantham combined for five saves in goal for Rosewood.

The Eagles host Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday.

Eagles claim

Rosewood's Roxie Phillips dished out seven assists and served up three aces in the Eagles' 21-25, 25-14, 25-9 win over Union on Monday in non-conference action.

Aubrey Reinhard added nine assists for Rosewood (15-3 overall), while Courtney Hill had 10 kills, nine aces and four blocks. Kasie Braswell contributed three kills for the Eagles, who travel to North Duplin today in Class 1-A Carolina Conference action.

Eagles rally

past Union

Rosewood rallied back from a first-game loss to defeat Union 16-25, 25-22, 25-13 in non-conference play.

Taylor Johnson paced the Eagles (11-5 overall) with seven kills, three aces and two blocks. Paige Babb added four aces and two blocks for Rosewood.

The Eagles travel to North Duplin today.

Middle school

Grantham volleyball d. Dillard 25-11, 25-12; 25-20, 25-16 -- Grantham (3-2 Division II) swept a doubleheader against Dillard on Monday. Madison Davis, Taylor Hood and Courtney Taylor paced Grantham, which hosts Mount Olive on Thursday. Cherisse White led Dillard.

Rosewood volleyball d. Spring Creek 25-17, 26-28, 25-20, 25-21 -- Jenna Aycock, Heather Silvani, Rebecca Fail and Kristen Lynn paced the Eagles (7-1). Rosewood hosts Norwayne on Oct. 16.

Norwayne volleyball d. Eastern Wayne 25-11, 25-22, 23-25, 28-26 -- Norwayne (8-0 overall) improved to 3-0 in conference play. The Cobras host Brogden on Thursday.

Norwayne soccer 3, Eastern Wayne 3 -- Tyson Pearson scored two goals for Norwayne (4-0-2), while Stephen Taylor scored twice for Eastern Wayne. Norwayne's Miles Claiborne and Eastern Wayne's Jason Horne added one goal each.
