Jaguars score 21 unanswered points vs. Hawks

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central converted two long third-down plays into touchdowns and eased past North Lenoir 21-9 in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Devon Atkinson threw a pair of 17-yard touchdown passes to Kenyon Tuten and Kajon Farrow, respectively, in the second quarter. The two strikes, which occurred in a two-minute stretch, helped the Jaguars erase a 3-0 lead.

Ricky Jarman's 28-yard field goal had given the Hawks an early advantage less than a minute into the second period.

"Our defense played a lot better, with the exception of four or five plays," said North Lenoir coach Wayne Jackson, whose team forced three fumbles. "Early in the game we had a couple of turnovers we didn't capitalize on and that's what hurt us.

"We didn't make some big plays that our opponents are making and that's been the story of our season. They're a good football team and right now we're struggling."

Richard Williams added a 43-yard, third-quarter touchdown run with 8 minutes, 35 seconds left. Marquis Lawrence successfully booted his third PAT to boost the Jaguars' advantage to 21-3.

The Hawks' Parris Lee closed the gap to 21-9 on a 2-yard scamper with five minutes remaining in regulation.

North Lenoir (1-6, 0-1 EPC) entertains Tarboro next Friday.
