JV football - C.B. Aycock, E. Wayne pick up ECC wins

WILSON -- Dusty Wooten picked off two Beddingfield passes and returned one for a touchdown in Charles B. Aycock's 16-6 victory Thursday evening.

It was the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Dominique Young emerged the Golden Falcons' offensive leader with 92 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Marcus Cobb added 64 yard on nine totes.

Young also picked a Bruin pass.

Beddingfield owned a 183-162 edge in total offense.

C.B. Aycock (4-2, 1-0 ECC) entertains Kinston next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Southern Wayne 12

DUDLEY -- Eastern Wayne opened its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference season with an 18-12 conquest of archrival Southern Wayne at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

The Warriors forced a turnover on the Saints' first series and took over in four-down territory. Will White cashed in from 5 yards out.

White grabbed a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Walker Gourley and Azaveous Dickerson finished off the scoring a touchdown.

Gourley completed two passes for 25 yards and rushed for another 25 yards. Dickerson rushed for 45 yards and Danny Smith added 80 yards rushing.

Corey Baker paced the Southern Wayne offense with 101 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Baker ran for a 1-yard score and hauled in a 54-yard scoring strike from quarterback Tyler Edwards. Edwards finished with 70 yards passing on five of 15 attempts.

Terrell Richardson recorded 11 tackles for the Saints' defense. Juan Segura and Derek Whitman had seven tackles apiece. Whitman also picked off an Eastern Wayne pass.

Southern Wayne (2-3, 0-1 ECC) plays host to Wilson Beddingfield next Thursday. The Warriors welcome Wilson Hunt to Little Big Horn.

Tarboro 22

Goldsboro 14

Tarboro scored the game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds remaining and turned back Goldsboro 22-14 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams.

Darren Pittman accounted for the Cougars' offense with a 3-yard run and 15-yard reception from quarterback Dustin Uzzardo. Uzzardo completed a two-point conversion pass to Enrique Moses on Goldsboro's second touchdown.

The Vikings scored twice in the fourth quarter and handed the Cougars their first defeat in six outings.

Ivory Harris led Goldsboro's defense with six solo tackles and three assists. A.J. Parker notched five tackles and one assist. Josh McCoy posted a team-high seven solo stops and added one assist.

Moses and Pittman each had five tackles and two assists.

Goldsboro (5-1) plays host to Greene Central next Thursday.

Middle schools

Norwayne 14, Spring Creek 0 -- The Cobra defense recorded its fourth shutout in five outings. Chris Murchinson and Shepherd Whitfield each provided a touchdown. Norwayne (4-1) travels to Brogden next Thursday.

Eastern Wayne 38, Rosewood 0 -- Jamal Broadie rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown. Xavier Branch recovered an Eagle fumble and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown. Johnathan Midgette, Lamar Best and Rashawn Barnes spearheaded the shutout on defense. Eastern Wayne (5-0) is the guest of Greenwood next Thursday.

Dillard 40, Mount Olive 0 -- Michael Sawyer caught touchdown passes of 20 and 25 yards from quarterback Cortez Sprangle. Sprangle also completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Michael Sykes. Deonte Linder rushed for touchdowns on runs of 5 and 15 yards, while Freddie Jones added a 30-yard touchdown run. Dillard improved to 3-1 overall and plays host to Spring Creek next Thursday.
