Local Roundup: Chargers shut out Pats

Sam Steed and Brandon Davis provided the offense in Wayne Country Day's 3-0 shutout of Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on the Class1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference boys' soccer scene Friday afternoon.

Steed tallied two goals and Davis contributed one as the Chargers improved to 10-3 overall and 3-2 against CPIC opposition.

"We starting to gel and I think our heart is finally in it," said WCDS coach Paul Estrada. "We've played two very important games back-to-back and have won them convincingly.

"I'm very proud of the team and happy that we are playing so well."

Keeper Ryan Ford stopped five Patriot shots and earned his second consecutive shutout in goal. WCDS owned a 15-11 edge in shots on goal in the 80-minute contest.

"(The) defense played outstanding," said Estrada. "Travis Davis, Jay Grissette and Jeff Franklin were standouts. Again, we had great play from the bench and stellar player from the entire team.

"Everyone is doing their part and starting to see their importance to the team."

Rosewood goes

3-0 for the week

Rosewood High finished the week 3-0 after a 6-0 shutout against Farmville Central at Branch Pope Field.

Goss Kendall collected the hat trick-plus-one (four goals) as the Eagles picked up their third consecutive win, and climbed to 6-3-1 overall.

Taylor Carr contributed one goal and two assists. Conner Adams rounded out the scoring with one goal.

Rosewood entertains Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A foe Spring Creek on Monday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Eagles' Price

sets school record

Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price turned in a school-record performance during Friday afternoon's non-conference dual meet against county rival Goldsboro High.

Price ran the 3.1-mile course in 22 minutes, 3 seconds.

Goldsboro's Danielle Irby finished a distant second in 23:19. The Eagles' Martha Summerlin took third in 25:26. The Cougars' Ashley Thompson claimed fourth in 27:32 and Wayne Christian's Kayla Kennedy (27:57) rounded out the top five.

On the boys' side, the Eagles' Doug Johnson crossed the finish line in 19:01 as Wayne Christian seized the top six spots. Justin Brathwaite ended up second in 19:28, followed by Jon Massey (21:40), Noah Kearney (21:48), Josiah Wright (22:28) and Anthony Mulligan (22:47).

Rashad Evans emerged the Cougars' top runner in 25:17.

Team scores were not kept due to Goldsboro not fielding enough runners.
