Hawks upend Jaguars in EPC volleyball

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir opened second-half play in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference volleyball ranks with a 26-24, 25-20, 25-19 conquest of defending league champion Farmville Central.

The Hawks (11-3, 5-1 EPC) snapped the Jaguars' 15-match, regular-season win streak and seized a first-place share of the conference lead.

"The entire team played excellent defense," said Hawks coach Heather Humphrey Carson. "It was a total team effort."

Senior setter Lauren Hudson dished out 17 assists and finished a perfect 15 of 15 on serve. Senior outside hitter Brittany Sanders provided seven kills and one block, while Connor Jordan added seven kills.

Brittany McPhail delivered four kills and Kayla Sutton contributed seven kills and three blocks.

North Lenoir tallied 12 points with Sutton on serve and 17 points with freshman Marisa Lanier on serve.

The Hawks entertain SouthWest Edgecombe on Monday.

Eagles suffer

Carolina 1-A loss

LITTLEFIELD -- Rosewood senior hitters Courtney Hill and Kasie Braswell delivered season highs of 17 and 11 kills, respectively, during Thursday afternoon's match at Ayden-Grifton.

However, the Chargers stormed from behind for an 11-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11 victory over the Eagles -- the reigning Carolina 1-A Conference champions.

Ayden-Grifton (4-9, 2-4) earned its second league win of the season, while Rosewood (12-3) suffered its second consecutive conference defeat in six outings.

Hill added three service aces, five blocks and one dig. Braswell provided two aces and five digs. Ashley Williams contributed seven aces and three blocks for the Eagles, who beat the Chargers in five sets nearly three weeks ago.

Roxie Phillips and Aubrey Reinhard dished out 14 and 12 assists, respectively. The duo combined for six digs defensively.

Rosewood entertains North Johnston next Tuesday.

Princeton keeps

league lead at 6-0

PRINCETON -- Sarah Gibbs and Cynthia Peedin combined for 13 kills in Princeton's 25-14, 27-25, 19-25, 25-23 win over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Spring Creek.

Gibbs added a service ace, five digs and one block. Peedin also provided five aces, two digs and one block. The Bulldogs (14-2) remained unbeaten in six conference matches heading into next Tuesday's contest at North Duplin.

Kortnie Yutzy, Tiesha Williams and Amber Wood combined for 41 digs defensively.

Brittany Davis dished out 25 assists.

Tasha Whitfield paced the Gators' offense with nine kills, four blocks and one ace. Shaquita Brooks recorded five kills and three blocks, while Kristin Smith chipped in five aces, three kills and three digs.

Brooke Albertson (two kills, two digs) and Ashley Barwick combined for 12 assists.

Spring Creek (3-8, 1-5) entertains Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday.

KENLY -- North Johnston captured its second-consecutive Carolina 1-A Conference victory with a 19-25, 25-15, 25-14, 23-15, 15-13 decision over North Duplin.

Heather Hudson led the Rebels with four kills, one service ace, seven digs and five blocks. Jessica Pridgen added three kills. Brittany Carr collected four kills, two aces and a team-high 10 digs.

Julie Ivey contributed one kill, five assists and four aces. Vanessa Lynch chipped in one kill, seven assists and one ace. Casey Pate recorded five kills, one assist, two aces and eight digs.

North Duplin (8-3) slipped to 3-3 against Carolina Conference opposition.

Beddingfield stops

Golden Falcons

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock opened second-half play in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference with a 25-10, 25-13, 25-17 loss at Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (8-4) slipped to 3-3 in the league, while the Bruins (14-3, 6-0 ECC) earned their 16th consecutive win against conference opponents.

"We were too concerned about what Beddingfield was doing and not what we were doing," said Aycock coach Davis Harris. "All the things we needed to do to have a chance to win, we did none of them."

Seniors Amy Fryt and Jazzmine Lee collected nine and six kills, respectively. Harris said that setter Emily Jordan had a "strong match."

The Golden Falcons play host to Kinston next Tuesday.

posts CPIC shutout

Brandon Davis tallied both goals and Wayne Country Day earned a 2-0 shutout against Kerr-Vance in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

"A very technical win," said Chargers coach Paul Estrada. "I couldn't be happier with how the boys played. We kept possession of the ball for most of the game.

"I'd like to praise the whole team for their excellent play."

Keeper Ryan Ford had five saves in goal.

Wayne Country Day (9-3, 2-2 CPIC) knocked Kerr-Vance (9-3-1) from the unbeaten ranks in conference play. The Chargers entertain Faith Christian-Rocky Mount today.

turn back Aycock

WILSON -- Wilson Fike's Amy Otteson carded a personal-best 3-under par 68 and earned medalist honors in a dual-team, non-conference match against C.B. Aycock at Willow Springs on Thursday afternoon.

Otteson, the reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A eastern regional champion, led the Golden Demons to a 146-161 victory. Teammate Casey Narron provided a 78 on the par-71 layout.

Aycock's Kelli Forbis shot a season-best 1-over 72, while teammate Brooke Newell added an 89.

The Golden Falcons return action Oct. 9 for an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Lane Tree Golf Course.

DUDLEY -- Despite defaulting matches at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, Wayne Christian remained unbeaten in nine outings with a 5-4 victory over Southern Wayne's junior varsity team Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles received singles wins from Brooke Barfield, Katie Fairchild and Regan Hinton. Hinton-Barfield and Fairchild-Rebecca James each claimed a doubles victory.

LeighAnn Jarman and Rebecca James each captured a singles win for the Saints.

Mossberg, the fifth seed, outlasted Michele Cox 6-4, 6-2. The sixth-seeded Lewis stopped Zanetta Smith 7-5, 6-2.

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne collected two key doubles points and upended Kinston 6-3 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action on the Bill Fay Park courts Thursday afternoon.

The Saints' No. 1 doubles of Tara Hirsch-Amber Bowden claimed an 8-4 decision. The third-seeded tandem of Whitli Thornton-Tara Tillman cruised to an 8-2 victory.

Hirsch, Bowden, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox each captured a straight-set singles win.

Southern Wayne (8-4, 4-4) equaled last year's win total and entertains Wilson Hunt next Tuesday.

The duos of Ashley Grant-Grayson Daniell, Casey Perry-Dulce Quinarez and Abbey Dail-Jessica Gray each claimed a pro-set (eight-game) victory.

Daniell, Perrry, Quinarez and Gray each won their singles match.

"We played outstanding today," said Rams coach Brad Sauls. "Riverbirch has a good team, so I am very pleased with our performance.

"Casey played great today. She was sharp at the net in singles and doubles."

Courtney Hill and Talisha Johnson contributed four and three kills, respectively, in the straight-set win.

The Hawks scored 12 points with Enjoli Mason on serve. They collected 10 and eight points, respectively, with Thomas and Nicole Howard on serve.

Lynch recorded one kill, three assists, three service aces and two digs for the Rebels.

Katie Swanzey added two aces and eight digs, while Sam Cates collected four kills. Katlyn Eloshway contributed one kill.

Kristin Smith added two kills and three digs. Shaquita Brooks provided three aces and five kills. Megan Smith had two aces, three digs and one kill.

Spring Creek (3-8, 2-4 Carolina) plays host to Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday.

Norwayne volleyball d. Grantham 25-10, 11-25, 25-11, 25-9 -- The Cobras remained unbeaten in five outings with the four-set win. Norwayne (1-0 WCMSAC Division I) plays back-to-back home matches next Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, against Dillard and Spring Creek.

Eastern Wayne soccer d. Greenwood 13-0 -- Nick Bowden notched four goals and two assists for the unbeaten Warriors. Tyler Brown provided three goals and one assist.
