MOUNT OLIVE -- Adrian Daniels and Adam Caston scored goals in the first half and Trojan goalkeeper Bryan Stitz made a key save in the second half as Mount Olive held off Southern Virginia 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer Monday at Trojan Field. The Trojans outshot Southern Virginia 21-2.

Mount Olive (5-5-0) got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when Daniels headed in a loose ball from in front of the left post after Chris Jasso's shot was deflected off the Southern Virginia goalkeeper. The Trojans nearly added a goal less than a minute later off a cross into the box by Charles Williams, but SVU goalkeeper Dustin Jensen was able to cover the ball before Mount Olive could get to it.

Southern Virginia (0-7-2) managed only one shot in the first half, but created a number of dangerous chances, including a breakaway opportunity when Seth Hansen captured a loose ball at the midfield line. Trojan defenders Brandon Mills and Ryan Capdepon were able to catch up and prevent a shot attempt.

The score remained 1-0 until the 39th minute when the Trojans capitalized on a Southern Virginia miscue. The SVU keeper was whistled for possessing the ball outside of the box on a punt and Caston put home the direct kick to give the Trojans a two-goal lead going into intermission.

Southern Virginia had its best scoring chance in the 54th minute when Benjamin Griffin headed the ball from 15 yards out and Stitz got just enough of the ball to tip it off the crossbar. The Knights followed with a corner kick opportunity, but the Trojans were able to clear the ball out. Mount Olive held a 10-1 shot advantage in the second half, but was unable to extend its lead.

Stitz, who entered the game after halftime, finished with the one save. Chase Smith started and played the first 45 minutes as the Trojans recorded their third shutout of the season. Jensen finished with seven saves for Southern Virginia.

The match was originally scheduled for August 30, but was moved to Monday.

Mount Olive has a day off, then returns to the field Wednesday to play host to Francis Marion. The home team has won in each of the last three meetings between the two teams. Match time is 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.

MOC golfers hold

first-round lead

WAGRAM -- Mick Moberg shot a 3-under-par 69 and Chris Bitzenhofer carded a 72 as Mount Olive shot a 1-over-par 289 to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the St. Andrews Men's Golf Fall Invitational Monday at Deercroft Golf Club in Wagram. Individually, Moberg is tied for second place, three strokes out of the lead.

After shooting an even-par 36 on the front nine, Moberg shot 3-under on the back nine. Bitzenhofer shot even par on both the front nine and the back nine to place in a tie for seventh out of 44 golfers.

Johan Hagsund is tied for 10th with a 36-37--73, while Cameron Phillips is tied for 16th with a 38-37--75. Scott Woodard overcame a 42 on the front nine with an even par on the back to tie for 25th with a 78.

Mount Olive is among six Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference teams in the nine-team field. Limestone is second at 292, followed by Barton with a 296. The tournament is hosted by St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

The 36-hole tournament concludes today.

Moberg leads

MOC women

WAGRAM -- Kristin Moberg is in the clubhouse in third place and Mount Olive has an eight-shot lead after the first round of the St. Andrews Women's Golf Fall Invitational Monday at Deercroft Golf Club in Wagram. The Trojans carded a 359 as a team.

Moberg shot a 40 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine to end the day four shots out of the lead. Kate Somek is tied for fifth out of 12 golfers with a 46-45--91. Kristen Freeman (46-47--93) is seventh, followed by Deborah Woodrum (43-51--94) is in eighth place.

Limestone is second in the three-team tournament with a 367, followed by tournament host St. Andrews with a 370.

The 36-hole tournament concludes today.
