Eagles remain unbeaten in league play

Rosewood remained unbeaten in Class 1-A Carolina/Super Six Conference play with an 8-0 win at home over Wallace-Rose Hill on Monday.

The Eagles (7-2 overall), who have lost just three matches against conference foes, improved to 7-0 in league play heading into Wednesday's match at James Kenan. Rosewood has won 19 straight Carolina/Super Six matches dating back to last season.

"Since it's my senior year, I want us to win conference and hopefully go far in dual-team and individuals," Rosewood's Sidney Worrell said. "We just need to keep practicing hard and make the most of our ability."

At No. 1 singles, Worrell was involved in the longest match of the afternoon -- a three-hour nail-biter against the Bulldogs? Lindsey Powell.

Powell, a junior, forced a seventh game in both sets and pushed Worrell to a tiebreaker in the second set, but the senior persevered to win 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) to remain unbeaten in singles against league opponents.

"She (Powell) was better than the last time we played," Worrell said. "I was sick but I got my confidence up. I knew I had to win for the team."

Rosewood junior Jillian Casey dropped the first set 2-6 to Whitney Boyette at No. 5, then bounced back to claim a 7-5 (6-2) victory in the only other closely-contested match of the afternoon.

"Jillian started slow, but she rose to the occasion and won the second set," veteran Rosewood coach Bert Perkins said. "I thought she controlled the tiebreaker."

Rosewood juniors Missy Bailey and Erica Nichols cruised at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively. The duo also teamed to claim an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles over Beth Cottle and Hannah Evans.

"Those two will be playing doubles in the conference tournament and hopefully they can contend for the championship," Perkins said. "Hopefully they will have some good matches to get them prepared."

Seniors Jamie Andrews (No.4) and Karli Beasley (No. 6) finished off the singles-sweep with straight-set wins over Evans and Simmonne Murray. The doubles combination of Casey-Jannekke Parrish defeated Megan McGowan and Amber Fussell 8-3 to push the score to the final margin.

"We had a few more closer matches today," Perkins said. "Our No. 5, 6 and 7 players are very competitive and that is helping us out. It's helping us improve at the bottom of the lineup."

Worrell and Andrews led their No. 1 doubles match with Powell and Buckener, 4-0, but it was not fished due to darkness.

Wallace-RH (3-3) travels to Spring Creek on Wednesday.
