Warriors fall at Apex

APEX -- Eastern Wayne never recovered from a quick 14-0 start by Apex as the Warriors suffered a 38-0 loss in Wake County on Friday night.

Aided by a pair of Eastern Wayne penalties, the Cougars scored on a short field on their first possession, then scooped-and-scored on a fumble on the Warriors' ensuing possesion to go up by two scores less than one minute into the game. After a field goal in the first quarter, the home teams' final three scores came on runs of 71 and 95 and a 38-yard touchdown strike to push the score to 38-0.

"They had 14 points on the board before a minute ticked off. I thought we were prepared to play, but it went out the window when we got down 14-0," Eastern Wayne Jeff Price said. "I guess I did a poor job getting us ready to play. Once it gets out of hand, you can't control it."

Andrew Blevins led the Warriors' ground game with 93 yards on 20 carries. Eastern Wayne was unable to get any balance through the air as quarterback David White was just 1-of-8 with two interceptions. The 4-A Cougars (3-2) had no turnovers and outgained the Warriors 300-162.

Eastern Wayne (3-2) hosts North Lenoir on Friday in the final non-conference game for both teams.

"We've got one more week to get ready. The Apex game was more-or-less a scrimmage in the middle of the season," Price said. "That's behind us. We'll lick our wounds and get back on Monday to get the game plan in."
