MOUNT OLIVE -- Lyndsay Brennan, Kate Painter and Caitlyn Wright scored two goals apiece to lead Mount Olive to an 8-0 victory over Converse in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer Saturday at Trojan Field. The win extends the Trojans' winning streak to three, all in conference play.
Mount Olive (7-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 CVAC) scored three goals in the first nine minutes of the match and nearly got on the scoreboard in the first minute of the contest when Emily Escolas' shot hit the post. The Trojans led 6-0 at halftime and rested most of their starters the entire second half.
Painter has four goals in her last three matches overall and in her last two home contests. The Trojans have outscored their last three opponents 17-4.
Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Wingate to take on regionally seventh-ranked Wingate. Match time is 6 p.m.
Men's soccer
MOUNT OLIVE -- Bradley Carroll recorded his second two-goal match of the season as Mount Olive defeated Guilford 4-1 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer Saturday at Trojan Field. The win snaps Mount Olive's two-match losing skid, as the Trojans improved to 4-5-0.
Chris Jasso scored the Trojans' first goal, then Carroll followed with a pair of goals to give Mount Olive a 3-0 lead. Guilford (2-4-1) scored a goal in the final minute of the first half to avoid the shutout. The Trojans added a goal in the second half as Jordan Covington scored his first goal of the season.
Carroll also had a two-goal performance September 6 against Chowan. Jasso's goal was his second in as many contests.
Mount Olive returns to action Monday as the Trojans play host to Southern Virginia in a match-up originally scheduled for August 30. Match time is 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.
Women's volleyball
MOUNT OLIVE -- Sam Mitchell recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 16 digs, but it wasn't enough as Mount Olive fell to conference-leader Limestone 3-1 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. Limestone, which remains the lone unbeaten team in conference play, was led by Melissa Thomas with 16 kills.
After losing game one, Mount Olive (5-7 overall, 4-4 CVAC) came back with a win in game two to even the match. But Limestone (12-6, 7-0) won the final two games to close out the match.
Nikki Murphy led the Mount Olive defense with a match-high 22 digs, while Corie Skislak recorded four blocks.
Alison Hamilton tallied 46 assists, 16 digs and four aces for Limestone, while Amber Wise added 18 digs for the Saints, which entered the match leading the nation in digs per game.
Mount Olive returns to action Sunday as the Trojans play host to Anderson in a CVAC match-up. Match time is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena. Limestone heads to Wilson Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on Barton in CVAC action.
