BAILEY -- Tristan Bass and Anthony Council sparked Southern Wayne to a come-from-behind 29-18, non-conference victory over Southern Nash at Firebird Stadium on Friday evening.
Bass returned a third-quarter kickoff 71 yards for a touchdown to give the Saints a late-game lead it wouldn't relinquish. Council, the reigning News-Argus Offensive Player of the Year, sealed the road victory with a 78-yard touchdown romp in the fourth quarter.
The two scores erased an 18-point run by the Firebirds that resulted in an 18-17 lead.
Council officially clipped the 3,000-yard mark for his career with a 241-yard performance on 26 carries. Bass added 50 yards on 13 totes for the Saints, who remained unbeaten in three road contests this season.
Southern Wayne owned a 333-179 edge in total offense.
Saints head coach Bob Warren credited the defense, which forced four Firebird fumbles, including three in the opening half. The defense recorded three fourth-quarter sacks to prevent Southern Nash, of the Class 3-A NEW Athletic 6 Conference, from staging a late-game rally.
Alex Aldridge, Eric Futrell and John Futrell emerged Southern Wayne's defensive leaders in total tackles.
The Saints (4-2) will enjoy a bye week before opening their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule Oct. 6 at archrival Eastern Wayne. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Little Big Horn.
Southern Nash fell to 2-3 overall.
