Rosewood survives North Duplin's upset bid

Senior middle hitter Courtney Hill pounded out a match-high 15 kills and defending Class 1-A Carolina Conference champion Rosewood outlasted North Duplin 22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 15-8 on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles (11-1, 4-0 Carolina) earned their 14th consecutive regular-season victory over league competition. They entertain Goldsboro on Monday and conclude first-half play next Tuesday at archrival Princeton, which remained unbeaten in league play after a four-set win at Ayden-Grifton.

"(A) really tight, and intense game," said Rebels head coach Heather Best.

Hill also provided four blocks and five service aces for the Eagles, who have yet to lose on their home court this season. Ashley Williams added nine kills for Rosewood, while teammates Kasie Braswell and Aubrey Reinhard each provided six kills.

Reinhard dished out 13 assists.

"Taylor Johnson and Jennifer Hall stepped up in games three and four to us with the victory," said Eagles coach Jennifer Cochran. "In game five, we talked and worked (together) on the court."

Heather Hudson paced North Duplin (7-2, 2-2 CC) with a triple-double -- 12 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks.

"Heather did a great job for us at the net, reading their hitters and playing strong offense as well," said Best.

Julie Ivey and Vanessa Lynch combined for 16 assists and six aces. Casey Pate provided five digs, while Sam Cates contributed four aces and nine digs.

"I'm proud of the girls," said Best. "We need to keep going strong for Spring Creek."

Forbis, Newell

lead C.B. Aycock

CLAYTON -- Kelli Forbis earned medalist honors with an even-par 36 in Charles B. Aycock's 76-81, non-conference victory over Clayton at River View Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.

Brooke Newell provided a nine-hole score of 40.

Sharlene Gail led the Comets with a 38, while teammate Lizzie Bundy fired a 43.

C.B. Aycock returns to action Monday for an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match at Wedgewood Public Golf Course in Wilson.

Saints defeat

Gators at SWCC

MOUNT OLIVE -- Spring Creek's Paula Webber claimed medalist honors with a nine-hole round of 49, but Southern Wayne took the team victory 106-115 on the Southern Wayne Country Club links.

Alyssa Bradshaw led the Saints' effort with a 51. Jordan Hill and Taylor Reaves each turned identical cards of 55.

Jessica Daniel complemented Webber's effort with a 66.

Southern Wayne plays again Monday in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Wedgewood Public Golf Course in Wilson.

Cross country

Price, Johnson

lead Eagle runners

Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson and Jennifer Price each emerged victorious on their home course during a four-team, Carolina Christian 1-A Conference meet Thursday afternoon.

Johnson ran the 3.1-mile trek in 19 minutes, 12 seconds and edged runner-up Doogie Adams of Cresset Christian by two seconds. Cresset claimed the team win with 26 points, while the Eagles had 48 and Northwood Temple scored 49.

Justin Brathwaite complemented Johnson's effort with a fourth-place time of 20:31.

Price posted a time of 23:22 in the girls' portion of the meet. Northwood's Natalie Perez crossed the line second in 24:51. The Eagles' Martha Summerlin fiished fifth overall in 25:54 and teammate Charity Wright took ninth place in 28:13.

Cresset edged Wayne Christian 33-41 for the team win.

The Eagles run again next Monday at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park against Spring Creek and C.B. Aycock.

North Lenoir

sweeps Goldsboro

LaGRANGE -- Brittany Sanders delivered a match-high nine kills in North Lenoir's 25-10, 25-10, 25-13 victory over Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival Goldsboro at Wooten Gymnasium.

Anna Kennedy added four kills for the Hawks, who improved to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the EPC.

Marisa Lanier served three aces. Brynne Fulghum added two aces, while Connor Jordan served one.

North Lenoir travels to Greene Central next Tuesday. Goldsboro is the guest of Rosewood on Monday.

Golden Falcons

take ECC twinbill

WILSON -- C.B. Aycock swept Wilson Beddingfield 9-0 and 6-0 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

Kristen Bennett and Courtney Barnes each picked up two pro-set (eight-game) singles victories for the Golden Falcons, who extended their unbeaten conference-match win streak to 298.

Overall, 10 Aycock players won a singles match against the Bruins. Raychel Batts, Lizzie Sodoma, Kristen Prosser, Emilee Quinn, Kara Kelly, Mallory Strickland and Lauren Pierce each prevailed 8-0. Jessica Davis outlasted Zolly Rivera 8-5 at the No. 6 spot in the day's second match.

Batts-Sodoma, Strickland-Davis and Kelly-Pierce each earned a doubles victory.

C.B. Aycock (8-2, 6-0 ECC) entertains Kinston next Tuesday.

N. Duplin gets

key doubles wins

SEVEN SPRINGS -- North Duplin collected victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, and clipped Spring Creek 5-4 on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

Tied at 3-3 through singles play, the Rebels' No. 2 tandem of Brittany Coley-Elizabeth Lane stopped Jamison Mossberg-Ivey Best 8-2. The No. 3 duo of Jodie Williamson-Sarah Jackson doubled up Rachel Lewis-Maura Phipps 8-4.

Lane edged Best 9-8 (5) in singles, while teammates Coley and Sarah Jackson also claimed a singles win.

Mossberg, top-seeded Jamie Johnson and Lewis each prevailed in singles for the Gators. Johnson-Mossberg also triumphed in doubles.

Spring Creek (1-10, 1-6 Carolina) travels to North Johnston on Monday.

Greene Central

blitzes Panthers

BETHEL -- Greene Central swept the singles and doubles in a 9-0 conquest of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Pitt on Thursday afternoon.

Brittany Horton, Sarah Beth Carraway, Cally Hudson, Elizabeth McLawhorn and Samantha Taylor each posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Sixth-seeded Abby Sugg dropped just one game against the Panthers' Brandy Bullock.

Horton and Carraway each improved to 10-2 in singles play. Sugg is 9-3, while Taylor is 8-4. Hudson and McLawhorn, a freshman, have collected six singles wins apiece.

Horton-Sugg, Carraway-McLawhorn and Dana Spivey-Taylor each won their respective doubles match.

Greene Central (7-5, 3-1 EPC) entertains independent power Greenfield School on Monday.

Hawks double

up Rosewood

LaGRANGE -- Dustin King collected two goals in North Lenoir's 2-1, non-conference victory over Rosewood at Bullock Field.

Tyler Smith dished out an assist for the Hawks, who defeated the Eagles for the second time in seven days.

North Lenoir (3-5-2) launches its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference schedule next Tuesday at Farmville Central.

Rosewood fell to 3-3-1 overall.

Spring Creek

shuts out Rams

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Octavio Huerta and Ricardo Rangle each scored a goal in Spring Creek's 2-0, non-conference victory over Greene Central on Thursday.

Gator keeper Angel Sanchez stopped a penalty kick and earned 12 saves in goal.

Spring Creek (4-1) opens its Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference slate at home Monday against Louisburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Rosewood turned back North Duplin 26-24, 25-17 in their Carolina 1-A Conference battle Thursday afternoon.

Jennifer Hall led the Eagles with four service aces, two assists and one dig. Christie Phillips added two kills and four aces.

Felicia Lynch collected three aces and dished out two assists for the Rebels. Sam Cates recorded four digs and two kills. Katie Swanzey contributed six digs and one kill.

Rosewood (6-5) improved to 3-1 in the conference.

Saints claim

tight victory

Southern Wayne emerged victorious in five singles matches and knocked off county rival Eastern Wayne 5-4 on the John Allen Farfour Courts at Herman Park.

Scarlet Price, Brooke Dove, LeighAnn Jarman, Sabrina Haverty and Amberly Martin each seized a pro-set (eight-game) singles win for the Saints.

Louise Northington claimed the Warriors' lone singles victory.

Eastern Wayne swept the doubles, getting wins from the tandems of LeeAnna Lancaster-Katie Snell, Northington-Karry Brunette and Taylor Falcone-Leah Smith.

Middle schools

Eastern Wayne soccer 6, Mount Olive 1 -- Nick Bowden tallied the hat trick-plus-one (four goals) and dished out an assist for the unbeaten Warriors. Steven Taylor collected two goals and William Bowden handed out to assists. Eastern Wayne (3-0) travels to Greenwood next Wednesday. Mount Olive (2-2) is the guest of Brogden.
