JV football -- Goldsboro improves to 5-0

WILMINGTON -- Lamar Hicks returned an interception 60 yards for the game-winning touchdown in Goldsboro's come-from-behind 18-13, non-conference victory over J.T. Hoggard on Thursday evening.

The Cougars remained unbeaten in five outings and handed the Vikings, of the Classes 3-A/4-A Mideastern Conference, their first defeat of the season.

"The kids were a little awestruck because that was like going into a mini Kenan Stadium down there," chuckled Goldsboro coach Danny Merritt. "There were folks tailgating before the game."

Dustin Uzzardo completed touchdown passes of 25 and 45 yards to Tyquan Sprangle. Uzzardo ended the night 6 of 14 for 117 yards. Sprangle grabbed three receptions for 90 yards.

A.J. Parker emerged the Cougars' top rusher with 117 yards on 14 carries. Parker also led the defense with eight solo tackles and four assists.

Ivory Harris recorded seven stops and three assists. Josh McCoy and Enrique Moses each had five tackles, while Moses picked off a Hoggard pass.

Merritt said the Vikings had the ball twice inside Goldsboro's 30-yard line and came away empty. Hoggard missed a first-half field goal and turned the ball over on downs late in the second half.

Goldsboro is open next week and launches its Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference schedule at home Oct. 5 against Tarboro.

C.B. Aycock 52

North Lenoir 20

PIKEVILLE -- Dominique Young rushed for 217 yards and four touchdowns in Charles B. Aycock's 52-20, non-conference victory over North Lenoir at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Justin Ivers added 95 yards and two touchdowns on two carries.

Quarterback Zack Poole completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Lewallen.

The Golden Falcons, who trailed 14-6 at halftime, amassed 426 yards of total offense compared to 213 for the Hawks. Aycock also forced five turnovers.

C.B. Aycock (2-2) begins its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference campaign Oct. 5 at Wilson Beddingfield.

Southern Nash 48

Southern Wayne 28

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Jabari Dos Santos rambled for a season-high 246 yards and three touchdowns, but visiting Southern Nash prevailed 48-28 at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

James Jones Jr. complemented Dos Santos with 100 yards rushing on 13 carries. Marcus Graham rushed for 43 yards and hauled in a touchdown pass from quarterback Gary Woodard.

Defensive end Juan Segura had five solo tackles and five assists.

Southern Wayne (2-2) is off until Oct. 5 when it plays host to archrival Eastern Wayne in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

Middle schools

Greenwood 14, Rosewood 6 -- The T-Birds rallied from a six-point deficit to remain unbeaten in three contests. A.B. Scott and Adam Hobbs scored touchdowns on runs of 3 and 27 yards, respectively. Edward Muldrow led Greenwood with 87 yards of total offense. The T-Birds picked up their second win against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II competition. Rosewood fell to 0-3 overall.

Brogden 34, Spring Creek 0 -- J.D. Lofton returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown and added rushing TDs on runs of 55 and 75 yards. Rico Rich and J.D. Morrison each recorded a touchdown on offense. The duo combined for 12 tackles and two fumble recoveries on defense. Brogden improved to 2-1 overall and Spring Creek dropped to 0-2.

Dillard 42, Norwayne 6 -- Freddie Jones rushed for touchdowns on runs of 60 and 30 yards. Darius Currie added a 20-yard TD run, while Deontae Lender scored touchdowns on runs of 60, 50 and 20 yards. The Tigers improved to 2-0 and play at defending WCMSAC Division I champion Eastern Wayne next Thursday.
