MISENHEIMER -- Jessica Smoot scored the game-winning goal with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime as Mount Olive defeated regionally fifth-ranked Pfeiffer 3-2 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer Wednesday at Misenheimer. April Jacobs and Gina Dos Santos also scored for the Trojans, which posted its first-ever win over a top-five regionally-ranked team.
After a scoreless first half, the two teams combined for three goals in a span of less than nine minutes early in the second half. Mount Olive (6-4-0 overall, 2-1-0 CVAC) broke the deadlock when Jacobs scored on a direct kick from 20 yards out in the 51st minute. Pfeiffer (5-3, 2-1) answered four minutes later when conference scoring leader Laura Crews scored off an assist from Maria Reis.
The Trojans came back in the 60th minute, when Emily Escolas played a ball off a deflection by the Pfeiffer goalkeeper and Dos Santos chipped from 15 yards out to give Mount Olive a 2-1 lead. The lead stood until the 84th minute when Crews tied the match on a penalty kick to force overtime.
The match appeared to be headed to a second overtime, until Kirsten White sent a long service to Smoot, who beat a defender and the goalkeeper to end the match deep into the 100th minute. The match was Mount Olive's fourth in 10 contests this season to go into overtime as the Trojans evened their record to 2-2 in OT.
Trojan goalkeeper Ali O'Steen recorded a career-high 14 saves as Mount Olive was outshot 27-10. Suzie Hinman had four saves in 42 minutes and Jennifer Lindow had three saves in 57 minutes for Pfieiffer.
The match is the second in a row between Mount Olive and Pfeiffer to be decided in overtime. The Trojans defeated Pfeiffer 4-3 in OT in the semifinal round of last year's CVAC Tournament.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Converse in a CVAC matchup. Match time is 1 p.m. at Trojan Field.

MISENHEIMER -- Pfeiffer scored in the seventh minute of the match and went on to defeat Mount Olive 4-1 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer Wednesday. Chris Jasso scored the Trojans' lone goal, while Pfeiffer was led by Matt Denton's two goals and Cihan Nuhoglu's four assists.
Mount Olive (3-5-0 overall, 0-3-0 CVAC) remained winless in conference play as the Trojans were outshot 13-5. Pfeiffer (4-2, 2-2) took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Michael Sobolewski and Austin Knight. The Falcons extended the lead to 3-0 on Denton's goal in the 56th minute.
The Trojans avoided the shutout when Jasso scored his first goal of the season in the 60th minute. Denton closed out the scoring in the 68th minute.
Nuhoglu assisted on all four goals.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Guilford in a non-conference match-up. The two teams battled to a 3-3 tie last year. Match time is 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.
