Trojans snap skid
MOUNT OLIVE -- Kate Painter and Kirsten White scored two goals apiece -- all in the first half -- as Mount Olive recorded its highest-scoring output of the season and snapped a four-match losing skid with a 6-2 victory over Limestone in their Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon.
Gina Dos Santos scored a goal and assisted on both of Painter's goals, while Emily Escolas recorded assists on the Trojans' final two goals.
The match was scoreless in the 28th minute when Mount Olive (5-4-0 overall, 1-1-0 CVAC) exploded for four goals in a span of less than 10 minutes. White got a touch on April Jacobs' corner kick at the 27:27 mark to break the deadlock and Painter scored on a one-on-one six minutes later to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. Dos Santos found Painter again less than two minutes later and White scored on a takeaway two minutes after that as
Mount Olive went into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
The Trojans extended their lead to 5-2 in the 63rd minute when Jessica Smoot capitalized on a one-on-one opportunity for a goal. The Trojans closed out the scoring in the 75th minute after Emily Escolas captured her own deflection off the Limestone goalkeeper and found Dos Santos, who scored from 15 yards out.
Trojan goalkeeper Ali O'Steen recorded six saves.
Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday at CVAC foe Pfeiffer University.
Saints escape 1-0
MOUNT OLIVE -- Tom Beattie's goal in the 62nd minute proved to be the game-winner as nationally-ranked Limestone defeated Mount Olive 1-0 on the CVAC men's soccer scene Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans' best chance for the equalizer was denied when Bradley Carroll's 20-yard blast was tipped over the crossbar in the 85th minute.
Mount Olive (3-4-0 overall, 0-2-0 CVAC) held No. 11 Limestone to one shot in a scoreless first half, but was limited to only two shots of its own. The Saints (7-0-1, 3-0-0) had three shots from inside the box in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but two shots went over the cross bar and Trojan goalkeeper Chris Roush made a save on the third. Roush finished with two saves for the match.
The Trojans pressured midway through the second half as Adrian Daniels dribbled from midfield into the attacking third. But Limestone goalkeeper Ryan Robinson came off his line to cover the ball inside the box just before Daniels could take a shot.
