Warriors sweep cross country meet with Wayne Christian

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Eastern Wayne junior Chris Tesar emerged the top boys' runner and four Warriors recorded the same time during the girls' portion of a dual meet Thursday afternoon at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

Host Spring Creek had canceled the meet due to predicted rain, but neither the Warriors nor independent schools member Wayne Christian received the message. The two agreed to run the soggy 3.1-mile course.

Seven Eastern Wayne boys placed among the top 10 en route to a 17-45 conquest of the Eagles. Tim Wright and Steven Henricks ended up second and third, respectively, behind Tesar. Teammates Dustin Rhodes and Tyler Thornton rounded out the Warriors' scoring with fifth- and sixth-place efforts, respectively.

Doug Johnson led the Eagles with a fourth-place time of 21:04.

Eastern Wayne's Natalie Taylor, Lyddia Hirschy, Sarah Ricker and Kelly Gregorcyk each posted a time of 26:33 during the girls' race. Taylor was declared the winner.

Jennifer Price paced the Eagles with a fifth-place effort.

Eastern Wayne returns to action Saturday in the Adidas Invitational at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary. Wayne Christian plays host to a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference meet next Thursday.

Greene Central

runs in EPC 2-A

TARBORO -- Greene Central's boys finished second in a three-team, Eastern Plains 2-A Conference meet contested on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Tarboro High.

The Rams' Chris Nethercutt ran the soggy 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 36 seconds -- more than one minute slower than meet winner Brandon Coggins of Farmville Central. Coggins posted a time of 18:23 to help the Jaguars edge the Rams 22-36.

Robert Taylor complemented Nethercutt's effort with a fifth-place time of 20:07. Teammate Andrew Jarman was seventh overall in 20:16.

On the girls' side, Farmville Central ran unopposed since neither Greene Central nor Tarboro fielded enough runners to post a team score.

Ashley Oakes emerged the Rams' top performer with a fourth-place time of 23:39.

Volleyball

North Lenoir

sweeps EPC foe

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir snapped a two-match losing streak with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 victory over Eastern Plains 2-A foe Tarboro High on Thursday evening at Wooten Gymnasium.

Senior hitter Brittany Sanders paced the Hawks with 14 kills. Marisa Lanier added six kills. Kayla Sutton and Brittany McPhail provided four and two kills, respectively.

North Lenoir evened its EPC record at 1-1 and returns to action Monday at Rosewood.

Eastern Wayne

outlasts Hunt

WILSON -- Senior middle hitter Anna Wilkins delivered a team-high 14 kills in Eastern Wayne's 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-11 victory over Wilson Hunt in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Wilkins served 12 aces and added three solo blocks for the Warriors, who remained unbeaten in two ECC outings. Outside hitter Brittanni Billups provided 11 kills, while Carly Boyette contributed six kills.

Jordei Osby added five kills and two blocks.

Brooke Newsome dished out 30 assists in the four-set win, while libero Anna Hajjar collected 20 digs.

Eastern Wayne is the guest of defending ECC champion Wilson Beddingfield next Tuesday.

Rosewood

survives Panthers

KENLY -- Senior middle hitter Courtney Hill notched four blocks, three aces and four kills in Rosewood's 25-12, 17-25, 25-11, 25-21 win over North Johnston on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles (8-1) picked up their 14th consecutive victory against Carolina 1-A Conference opposition, and return home Monday for a non-league battle against North Lenoir.

Ashley Williams complemented Hill's effort with five blocks and one kill. Kasie Braswell contributed four kills, while Chandra Meadows added two aces and one kill.

Aubrey Reinhard dished out six assists.

Chargers grab

CPIC 1-A victory

Ashley Clark turned in a superb all-around game as Wayne Country Day stopped Greenfield 25-22, 25-12, 22-25, 25-12 on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

Clark served eight aces, pounded out seven kills, dished out 20 assists and recorded seven digs on defense. Shelly Sullivan added 11 aces, five kills and four digs for the Chargers, who evened their CPIC worksheet at 1-1.

Stephanie Sykes notched seven aces, five kills and six digs. Jessica Lewis (two blocks) and Bre Radford combined for 14 kills.

Wayne Country Day (4-5) travels to Halifax Academy today.

Bulldogs take

Rebels in three

PRINCETON -- Princeton notched nine consecutive points with Sarah Gibbs on serve in sets two and three, and rode the momentum to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-8 victory over North Duplin.

The Bulldogs (7-2) remained unbeaten in two Carolina 1-A Conference outings. The Rebels suffered their first loss in seven matches.

Gibbs served six aces to go along with nine kills, seven digs and two blocks. Stephanie Daughtry provided five aces, eight kills, seven digs and one block.

Brittany Davis handed out 30 assists.

Heather Smith and Amber Wood led the defense with six digs apiece.

"We did an excellent job last night," said Princeton coach Trudy Rast. "Everyone was covering the court well and getting our passes to the setter, which allowed us to work hits.

"Again, tonight, we served the ball very well."

Princeton is scheduled to host Goldsboro High next Monday. North Duplin continues league play at home Tuesday against Ayden-Grifton.

KINSTON -- Amy Fryt provided a career- and match-high 14 kills in Charles B. Aycock's 25-21, 25-13, 25-12 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Kinston on Thursday afternoon.

Lauren Pratt added six kills.

"Garrett Forrest played a good floor game with numerous digs and great passes," said Aycock coach Davis Harris.

The Golden Falcons (6-2, 1-1 ECC) entertains Wilson Hunt next Tuesday afternoon.

Eagles roll

past Norlina

NORLINA -- Michelle Krug dished out nine assists and Wayne Christian turned in a balanced offensive performance in its 25-16, 25-23, 25-19 victory over Carolina Christian 1-A opponent Norlina.

Traci Davis contributed four aces, one dig, two kills and one assist. Hope Wright had two kills and one block. Brooke Norris delivered four aces, three kills and one assist.

Katie Daniels collected two aces, five kills and one block.

Wayne Christian (8-9, 3-2 CCC) travels to Trinity Christian-Raleigh next Tuesday.

upsets Chargers

ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian converted a penalty kick in the final four minutes of regulation and upended No. 1-ranked Wayne Country Day 2-1 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

David Wilson tallied the Chargers' lone goal.

"Cameron Ford, Luxman Srikantha and Travis Davis had good games," said WCDS coach Paul Estrada. "Truthfully, I can't say that the outcome would have changed because they just wanted it more, but it sure was a tough way to lose.

"Without question, it was not our best-played game and Faith deserved to win."

WCDS keeper Ryan Ford notched seven saves.

The Chargers, the top-ranked team in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, fell to 6-2 overall. They play host to No. 3-ranked Gaston Day School at 4 p.m. Saturday.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- James Kenan prevailed at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, and edged Spring Creek 5-4 in a Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference match Thursday afternoon.

The teams battled to a 3-3 tie after singles.

Spring Creek got wins from top-seeded Jamie Johnson, fifth-seeded Jamison Mossberg and sixth-seeded Ivey Best. Lorry Chestnutt, Jessie Smith and Brittany Mathis each earned a straight-set singles victory for the Tigers.

Megan Sanderlin-Chestnut turned back Johnson-Laura Player 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Smith-Mathis easily defeated Lewis-Maura Phipps 8-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Mossberg-Best claimed an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

WILSON -- Sophomore Tara Hirsch triumphed in singles and combined with Amber Bowden for a doubles win during Southern Wayne's 7-2 loss at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Wilson Hunt.

Hirsch edged the Warriors' Madison Cauley 1-6, 6-2, 10-6 at the No. 1 singles spot. It was Hirsch's second three-set victory of the week after stopping Eastern Wayne's Lauren Bynum on Monday afternoon.

Hirsch-Bowden edged Cauley-Katie Wilson 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

Southern Wayne (5-2, 2-2 ECC) entertains defending league champion C.B. Aycock next Tuesday.

Mary West, Chris Hoeper, Brooke Barfield, Katie Fairchild, Samantha Reaves and Reagan Hinton each picked up a pro-set (eight-game) victory in singles.

West-Fairchild and Hoeper-Barfield each claimed a doubles win.

The Saints' tandem of Scarlet Price-Amberly Martin triumphed at No. 3 doubles.

Adam Hobbs added a six-yard touchdown run and Edward Muldrow grinded out 78 yards rushing. Seamus McKinney picked off a Grantham pass. Greenwood (2-0, 2-0 WCMSAC Division II) travels to Rosewood next Thursday. Grantham (0-2, 0-1) is off next week.

Norwayne football 6, Mount Olive 0 -- Norwayne remained unbeaten in two outings with a victory over the Trojans. The Cobras travel to Dillard next Thursday.

Norwayne soccer 6, Mount Olive 1 -- Travis Musselman notched the hat trick-plus-two (five goals) and John Taylor added one in the Cobras' season-opening win. Miles Claiborne and Tyson Pearson each dished out two assists, while Lauren Larison recorded one assist. Brandon Morales scored Mount Olive's lone goal off Jesus Rodriguez's assist. Norwayne visits Brogden next Monday.
