Aycock extends women's tennis streak to 294 in conference play

PIKEVILLE -- The streak goes on.

Charles B. Aycock triumphed in five of six singles matches, and swept the doubles in an 8-1 conquest of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (4-2, 2-0 ECC) claimed their 294th consecutive victory against conference opposition.

"I was especially pleased with our singles play," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "Hunt played very well in doubles, but it was nice to see our players respond to the challenge.

"It was a total team effort."

Raychel Batts, Lizzie Sodoma, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett and Courtney Barnes each picked up a straight-set win in singles. Batts, who earned her 91st career singles win, shut out the Warriors' Madison Cauley 6-0, 6-0.

Quinn lost just one game.

Batts-Sodoma, Quinn-Bennett and Kristen Prosser-Barnes each claimed a doubles win.

C.B. Aycock travels to Greenfield this afternoon and is the guest of county rival Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

Rams prevail

EDENTON -- Greene Central collected wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, and dealt John A. Holmes a 6-3, non-conference loss Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams, who started 0-3, have prevailed in four of their last five outings. They travel to Eastern Plains 2-A archrival Tarboro High on Thursday.

Greene Central and Holmes entered the match ranked No. 3 and 4, respectively, in the N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association 2-A poll.

"Our girls went after each other just like they did in the state semifinals last year, although the members of the team are totally different," said Rams head coach Donald Clark. "This was a total team victory, but I have to praise my seniors for their outstanding play all day today.

"Brittany Horton, Sarah Beth Carraway and Dana Spivey really came through for us today in doubles when we needed them the most."

Horton-Carraway upended the Aces' Lauren Williams-Leary 10-4. Spivey-Samantha Taylor stopped Mary Strzyzkwski-Alex Brusko 10-6.

Horton, Cally Hudson, Elizabeth McLawhorn and Abby Sugg each won their respective singles match.

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne lost a total of six games in singles and doubles play combined, and dominated Wilson Beddingfield 9-0 in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

Lauren Bynum, Casie Musgrave, Lindsey Frederick, Nicole Fine, Elizabeth Borden and Danielle Daniel each earned a straight-set victory for the Warriors. Bynum, Musgrave and Daniel did not lose a game.

The Warriors (3-0 ECC) continue league play at home Thursday against county archrival C.B. Aycock. Game time is 4 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.

The Saints received singles wins from Tara Hirsch, Katlyn Thornton, Amber Bowden, April Tucker, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox.

Hirsch-Bowden, Whitli Thornton-Tara Tillman and Tucker-Emily Martin each claimed a doubles victory.

Bradley Yelverton and Adam Brannan each collected two goals, and Wayne Christian remained unbeaten on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene with an 8-1 pummeling of Cape Fear Christian.

Hayden Gardner, Taylor Gardner, Josh Powers and Eric Williams each provided one goal for the Eagles.

"Matt Rouse, Andrew Radford and John Thomas Norris all played an excellent defensive game," said Wayne Christian coach Darryl Anderson.

The Eagles (5-5-1, 3-0-1 CCC) travel to Trinity Christian-Raleigh next Tuesday afternoon.

Cardinals shut

out E. Wayne

JACKSONVILLE -- Jacksonville tallied two goals within a six-minute span and eased past Eastern Wayne 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Adam Justice and Kirk Peterson scored in the eighth and 14th minutes, respectively, for the Cardinals -- the reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state champions.

Josh Robledo concluded the scoring with a goal in the 36th minute.

Eastern Wayne (3-2-1) entertains Jacksonville White Oak, which is ranked No. 15 in the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association 3-A poll today. Game time is 7 p.m. at Little Big Horn.

Faith Christian

endures defeat

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian setters Renee Provencal and Heather Crumpler combined for 33 assists, but Berean Christian prevailed 27-25, 25-18, 25-17 in N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A Coastal Region play Tuesday evening.

Provencal added seven digs and a team-high six kills for the Conquerors, who suffered their first loss in three outings. Crumpler served a team-high eight aces to go along with two kills and one dig.

Katlyn Floars and Summer Honeycutt provided five and four kills, respectively. Rebecca Smith dished out eight assists. Brooke Anderson contributed five digs and one service ace.

Faith Christian (2-1, 2-1 NCCSA Coastal 2-A) plays host to Liberty Christian-Durham next Tuesday.

dumps Panthers

KENLY -- Heather Hudson recorded seven blocks and two digs in North Duplin's 25-19, 26-24, 25-13 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Johnston on Tuesday afternoon.

Jessica Pridgen added three kills, two service aces, five digs and one block for the Rebels. Brittany Carr collected a team-leading four block assists.

Julie Ivey and Vanessa Lynch combined for eight assists.

North Duplin (6-0, 1-0 CC) travels to Princeton on Thursday.

Bulldogs roll

past Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Princeton opened its Carolina 1-A Conference season with a convincing 26-24, 25-7, 25-10 victory over Spring Creek on Tuesday afternoon.

Stephanie Daughtry paced the Bulldogs with seven aces, eight kills and nine digs. Sarah Gibbs added three kills, three digs and two blocks.

Brittany Davis handed out 19 assists.

Princeton scored 10 consecutive points in the second set, and seven straight in the third set to put away the Gators.

"Serving was the key," said Princeton coach Trudy Rast. "The first game, our serving was off and that made a huge difference in the score."

Ashley Barwick led the Gators with four kills, while Shaquita Brooks contributed three kills, one dig and three blocks. Brooke Albertson recorded six assists and two kills.

Princeton (8-2, 1-0 CC) entertains North Duplin on Thursday, Spring Creek is the guest of Ayden-Grifton.

Beddingfield

upends CBA

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock let leads slip away in every set and Wilson Beddingfield eventually claimed a come-from-behind 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 victory in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

The Bruins seized their 11th consecutive regular-season win against ECC opposition, and 13th overall including the conference tournament.

"We were right there, but just couldn't close out," said Aycock coach Davis Harris. "We just made mistakes at inopportune times."

Lauren Pratt pounded out a career-high 12 kills, while Amy Fryt provided seven kills.

C.B. Aycock (4-2, 1-0 ECC) travels to Clayton today.

N. Lenoir falls

in EPC opener

FARMVILLE -- Defending Eastern Plains 2-A champion Farmville Central needed five sets to defeat archrival North Lenoir 17-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 16-14 on Tuesday afternoon.

Stephony Newkirk and Brittany Talbott each had 11 kills for the Jaguars, who won their 11th consecutive EPC regular-season contest. Lashonna Shannon added 10 kills.

Grace Roberson dished out 26 assists for the Jaguars.

North Lenoir suffered its first loss of the season. Additional details were not available at press time.

Vikings need

TARBORO -- Goldsboro High prevailed in the opening set, but Tarboro High responded for a 26-28, 25-19, 25-20, 25-15 victory in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

Tiffany Burden led the Cougars with four aces and four kills. Camille Early contributed five kills, while Lavenia Lipford notched two aces.

Goldsboro fell to 0-7 overall.

HENDERSON -- Wayne Country Day opened its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference season with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-4 loss at Kerr-Vance Academy on Tuesday.

Bre Radford led the Chargers with three kills, two blocks and two digs. Shelly Sullivan contributed five digs, one kill and one service ace. Ashley Clark recorded two aces and three digs. Jessica Lewis posted two blocks.

WINTERVILLE -- Eastern Wayne's Will White posted 160 yards of total offense, including an 85-yard touchdown reception, to help lead the Warriors to a 28-0 win in a make-up game at South Central on Monday.

White finished with 75 yards on the ground, while Steven Hall rushed for 65 yards. Danny Smith added a four-yard touchdown run for Eastern Wayne, which improved to 2-1. Sophomore Walker Gourley tossed a pair of touchdown passes, one each to White and Hassan Best, and finished with 110 yards through the air.

Best picked up a fumble recovery for a touchdown as the Warrior defense held South Central to less than 100 yards of total offense. Eastern Wayne coach Jerry Pelt applauded the defensive play of Marcus Corbett, Gerrell Davis and Sam Choi.

The Warriors return to action on Thursday at home against D.H. Conley.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central improved to 3-1 overall with back-to-back 9-0 victories over Riverbirch and Eastern Wayne on Tuesday and Monday, respectively.

Ashley Grant, Grayson Daniell, Casey Perry, Abbey Dail and Dulce Quinarez each claimed pro-set (eight-game) singles wins for the Rams against Riverbirch. Jessica Gray won by default.

Grant-Daniell and Perry-Dail each cruised to easy wins in doubles. Quinarez-Gray took a default from Riverbirch at the No. 3 spot.

The same six players combined for six singles and three doubles victories against Eastern Wayne.

Greene Central travels to Wilmington Hoggard today.

Stephanie Knutson survived a tiebreaker at No. 4 singles and helped Wayne Country Day roll past Southern Wayne's junior varsity squad 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Knutson outlasted the Saints' Leigh Ann Jarman 9-8, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Teammates Catherine Ford, Ellen Elmore, Georgia Tanner, Virginia Best and Katie Hampton each posted a pro-set (eight-game) singles win.

Tanner remained unbeaten in three matches.

Ford-Virginia Mayo, Elmore-Knutson and Tanner-Best each emerged victorious in doubles.

Wayne Country Day took two of three doubles matches to seal a 6-3 win over Charles B. Aycock at the Falcons' courts on Monday.

Ford, Tanner, Knutson and Best emerged victorious in singles for the Chargers. The doubles tandems of Ford-Tanner and Elmore-Knutson finished off the victory.

Aycock (0-2), which travels to Greenfield School on Thursday, got singles wins from Hollie Baker and Nicole Kessler before the doubles combo of Kristen Fischer-Ashley Harrell picked up the Falcons' third and final win.

Princeton lost 25-11, 25-21 at Union on Monday.

Eastern Wayne opened its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference season with a 25-22, 25-22 victory over Southern Wayne.

Head coach Bruce Burridge said Brittany Spence and Regan Stoneburner were the players of the game.

"We played well and it was great to open up the conference with a win," said Burridge. "The girls are coming together and finally clicking."

Eastern Wayne (3-3, 1-0 ECC) travels to Wilson Hunt on Thursday.

KENLY -- North Duplin triumphed in the third and decisive set, and turned back North Johnston 25-19, 28-30, 25-18 in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

Felicia Lynch delivered four service aces, four assists and two digs for the Rebels. Sam Cates added two kills, two assists and three aces. Katlyn Eloshway notched one kill and two aces.

Crystal Robinson, Katie Carter and Ashley Sutton combined for four aces.

North Duplin (3-3, 1-0 CC) visits league foe Princeton on Thursday.

Jennifer Hall dished out five assists and Taylor Johnson provided four kills in Rosewood's 25-8, 25-17 victory over Ayden-Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

"Great teamwork and movement," said Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran.

Christie Phillips served five aces.

Rosewood improved to 3-4 overall.
