SNOW HILL -- Greene Central continued its unbeaten start and handed Ayden-Grifton its first loss on Friday night at the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex.
The Rams (3-0) finished with 409 yards of offense -- led by a stout 11-of-19 effort from quarterback Cameron Shelton, who passsed for a season-best 217 yards and two touchdowns.
Tyrell Lane had five catches for a career-high 100 yards with one score, while Harrison Walston added 86 yards on three receptions with a touchdown.
Walston's touchdown early in the fourth quarter boosted Greene Central out to a 30-0 lead after the two-point conversion. Walson also added a 46-yard run as J.J. Thompson (11-49) and Shelton (5-44, TD) paced the Rams' ground game.
The Chargers only touchdown came on a 2-yard run late in the game as the Rams held the visitors to 141 yards of offense.
"We played outstanding defense and our offense is coming around early this year rather than late," Bryant said. "It was big for us. We wanted a shutout, but they scored with 27 seconds left. Paul Cornwell and his staff at Ayden-Grifton do a great job. We were real happy to get out with the win like we had it."
Greene Central looks to improve on its first 3-0 start under Bryant when it hosts Kinston on Friday, while the Chargers (2-1) entertain South Robeson.
