Midway shuts out Princeton

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Midway turned two Princeton turnovers in the second half into touchdowns and defeated the Bulldogs 18-0 in a non-conference football game Friday night.

The Princeton defense played consistently, but the Bulldogs' offense could not overcome two lost fumbles and an interception.

"We have got to get more consistency on offense," said Princeton head coach Russell Williamson. "We turned the ball over way too much."

Midway quarterback Tyler Fann had over 200 yards in total offense in last week's loss to Spring Creek, but the scrappy Bulldog defense held the senior quarterback to only 47 total yards this week.

"We have worked hard on our defense, and we are tackling better. Our assistant coaches have done a good job teaching," said Williamson.

Midway received the opening kickoff and drove 82 yards in 13 rushing plays and scored the game's first touchdown on a 2-yard sneak by Fann. The drive consumed over six minutes of the opening period.

Princeton countered with a 15-play drive only to have a 36-yard field goal partially blocked on fourth down inside the Raider 20.

Bulldog quarterback Matt Blackwell was 4-4 passing on the initial Princeton possession and running back Gerrell Bogle rushed for 27 yards.

After a scoreless second quarter, Midway led by only a touchdown at intermission.

Midway scored again late in the third quarter as Fann connected with Danny Council on a 15-yard pass play in the right corner of the end zone.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs faced a third-and-long from their own 26. Operating out of the shotgun, the snap got by the Princeton quarterback and the ball rolled all the way to the goal line.

After a mad scramble for the ball, Garrett Knowles fell on the ball in the end zone for the Raiders -- making it 18-0.

"These kids have never quit as long as I have been here. They practice hard and play hard and do everything we ask them to." said Williamson.

Princeton (1-3) will try to get back on the winning track next week as it travels to Chatham Central in Bear Creek. Midway (2-1) plays host to North Johnston next Friday.
