Trojan men begin CVAC play Saturday

Last year's match against Queens turned out to be "Streakbuster Saturday" for the Mount Olive College men's soccer team. This time around, the Trojans hope to keep a few streaks alive.

Mount Olive opens Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play Saturday as the Trojans play host to Queens in men's soccer action. Match time is 3:30 p.m. at Trojan Field.

Mount Olive (2-2-0) snapped a two-match losing skid Wednesday with a 9-1 non-conference win at Chowan. Sophomore forward Matt Wallin scored two goals to give him a team-high three goals for the season. Wallin is one of nine Trojans to put the ball in the back of the net this season. Seniors Chris Jasso and Erik Small share the team lead in assists with two apiece.

Defensively, the Trojans have held three of their first four opponents to one goal or less.

Queens (2-2-0, 0-1-0) fell to Pfeiffer 1-0 Wednesday at home in the Royals' CVAC opener. The loss was only Queens' second regular season loss since 2001.

Last year, Mount Olive snapped Queens' 40-match regular season winning streak with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Royals, the Trojans' first-ever win over Queens. The win also snapped Mount Olive's 21-match winless streak when giving up the first goal.

Mount Olive is officially 1-2-0 in home contests this season, but 1-1-0 at Trojan Field. Last Saturday's match against USC-Aiken was played in Cary due to Tropical Storm Ernesto.

Notes: Mount Olive's match against Southern Virginia, originally scheduled for last week, has been rescheduled for September 25 at 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.
