North Duplin spikers now 4-0

CALYPSO -- Jessica Pridgen led a balanced North Duplin attack with seven kills and three service aces in a 25-23, 15-25, 22-25, 25-17, 17-15 victory over Lakewood on Thursday afternoon.

Pridgen also recorded three digs and one block defensively for the Rebels, who rallied from a 9-1 deficit in the decisive fifth set.

Heather Hudson provided five kills, five aces, 10 digs and four blocks. Julie Ivey dished out six assists to go along with one ace and four digs. Vanessa Lynch handed out seven assists and picked up two aces.

On Wednesday, Hudson notched 15 kills and six digs in North Duplin's 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 non-conference conquest of Hobbton.

Casey Pate served on 11 points and had six aces for the Rebels. Ivey served on 16 points and dished out six assists.

North Duplin (4-0) entertains Wayne Christian next Monday.

PIKEVILLE -- Shelly Lancaster delivered a match-high 11 kills in Charles B. Aycock's 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 non-conference victory over Wilson Fike on Thursday afternoon.

Amy Fryt provided eight kills and Jazzmine Lee contributed seven.

"We played very well and we passed the ball real well," said Aycock coach Davis Harris.

The Golden Falcons (4-1) entertain Wilson Beddingfield, the reigning Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference champion, next Tuesday. It is the league opener for both teams.

Princeton needs

four vs. Wildcats

BUNN -- Brittany Davis handed out 22 assists and Cynthia Peedin recorded seven kills in Princeton's 25-14, 19-25, 23-25, 24-26 non-conference loss at Bunn on Thursday afternoon.

Stephanie Daughtry added four service aces, nine kills, 12 digs and one block. Sarah Gibbs provided six kills, five blocks and one ace.

Kortnie Yutzy and Amber Wood each had 11 digs on defense.

Princeton (6-2) plays host to Union on Monday.

North Lenoir

defeats Pamlico

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir remained unbeaten in six matches with a 25-21, 25-14, 19-25, 25-11 win over Pamlico County at Wooten Gymnasium.

Brittany Sanders pounded out eight kills and serve two aces. Lauren Hudson added three aces.

Kayla Sutton complemented Sanders' effort with four kills and five blocks. Larisa Lanier contributed eight kills.

North Lenoir travels to Farmville Central, the defending Eastern Plains 2-A champion, next Tuesday afternoon. The teams have combined to win the last five regular-season EPC titles.

Tigers upend

Cougars at home

WARSAW -- Hannah Adams and Ashanti Stroud each had one kill and one ace in James Kenan's 25-16, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22 victory over Goldsboro at Harmon Gymnasium.

Lauren Hudson contributed three aces. Stephane Williams added two kills and one ace.

The Tigers improved to 3-1, while the Cougars exited 0-5.

girls take 3rd

DURHAM -- Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson finished fourth overall and Jennifer Price notched a third-place finish during a three-team, Carolina Christian 1-A Conference meet contested at Cresset Christian.

Cresset won the boys' meet with an 18-76 victory over the Eagles. Northwood Temple took third with 91 points.

On the girls' side, Cresset posted 27 points compared to runner-up Northwood with 48. The Eagles, whose top six runners placed among the top 18 overall, amassed 60 points.

Johnson ran the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes and 6 seconds. Teammates Justin Brathwaite and Noah Kearney took and 11th and 18th respectively. Jon Massey and Josiah Wright rounded out the Eagles' scoring with 20th- and 23rd-place times.

Price covered the course in 26:12 during the girls' portion of the race. Martha Summerlin was ninth overall. Shelle Anderson took the 15th spot, followed by Kayla Kennedy (16th), Charity Wright (17th) and Katie Austin (18th).

Wayne Christian runs again Monday at Cary Christian.

Chargers roll

past W. Christian

Sam Steed tallied two goals and four players notched one goal apiece in Wayne Country Day's 6-1 conquest of county rival Wayne Christian on Thursday afternoon.

Ryan Ford, Travis Davis, Cameron Strickland and George Mayo each found the back of the net as the Chargers completed their regular-season sweep of the Eagles.

Chase Darden tallied the Eagles' lone goal in the 57th minute.

Wayne Christian keeper Kyler Reed collected five saves.

The Chargers (4-1) play host to Southern Wayne next Tuesday, while the Eagles (1-3-1) travel to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount the same afternoon.

Aycock dealt

first defeat of '06

CLAYTON -- Clayton's defense limited C.B. Aycock to six shots on goal and the offense produced five goals -- including three in a 10-minute stretch -- in a 5-0, non-conference win Thursday evening.

Aycock (3-1-1) suffered its first defeat in five outings.

"(We) played well up until the last ten minutes of the game when they scored three quick goals," said Golden Falcons coach Kevin Adkins. "(We) ran out of gas after playing the night before."

The Golden Falcons travel to North Johnston next Monday.

Hawks soar

KINSTON -- Four players each tallied a goal in North Lenoir's 4-2 victory over county rival Kinston on Thursday evening.

C.C. Croom, George Walters, Tyler Smith and Dustin King each scored for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (1-3-2) entertains Kinston on Monday.

PIKEVILLE -- Kelli Forbis posted a nine-hole round of 39 as C.B. Aycock defeated Spring Creek in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Brooke Newell added a 41 for the Golden Falcons.

Paula Webber, the Gators' lone competitor, carded a 42.

notches ECC win

WILSON -- Southern Wayne lost just 10 games in nine singles and doubles matches combined and rolled past Wilson Beddingfield 9-0 on Thursday afternoon.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

Tara Hirsch, Katlyn Thornton, April Tucker, Amber Bowden, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox each claimed a straight-set singles win. Hirsch did not lose a game at the No. 1 slot.

Hirsch-Thornton, Whitli Thornton-Tara Tillman and Emily Martin-Christy Westbrook each prevailed on the doubles side.

Southern Wayne (3-0, 1-0 ECC) travels to Rosewood today.

Carolina 1-A win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek snapped its three-match skid with a 5-4 victory over North Johnston in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Thursday afternoon.

Jamie Johnson, Lauren Player, Jamison Mossburg and Ivey Best each emerged victorious in singles for the Gators. Mossburg pulled out a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 5 spot.

The tandem of Mossburg-Best secured the Gators' first win with an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

Spring Creek (1-3, 1-0 CC), which rebounded from shutout losses against East Duplin on Wednesday, continues league play Monday at Wallace-Rose Hill.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock extended its 27-year unbeaten conference-match win streak to 293 with a 9-0 decision against Kinston on Thursday afternoon.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A opener for both teams.

Raychel Batts remained unbeaten in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sarah Culbreth at the No. 1 slot. Kristen Prosser, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, Courtney Barnes and Kara Kelly each triumphed in their respective singles matches.

Aycock's Prosser-Lizzie Sodoma, Kelly-Lauren Pierce, Jessica Davis-Mallory Strickland completed the shutout with victories in doubles.

The Golden Falcons (3-1, 1-0 ECC) entertain Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Warriors pull

out ECC thriller

Eastern Wayne's No. 1 doubles of Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave captured the final three games in their match and helped the Warriors nip Wilson Hunt 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A opener for both teams.

Tied at 5-5, Bynum-Musgrave tightened up their play and dealt Hunt's tandem of Madison Lauley-Anna Strader an 8-5 loss. The victory completed a doubles sweep for Eastern Wayne. Teammates Mollie Musgrave-Lindsey Frederick and Elizabeth Borden-Emily Northington also won.

Bynum took a third-set tiebreaker to turn back Lauley 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 at No. 1 singles. Frederick blitzed Hunt's Jordan Winslow 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.

Eastern Wayne (1-0 ECC) travels to Beddingfield next Tuesday.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central began defense of its Eastern Plains 2-A championship with a 9-0 victory over North Lenoir at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

Brittany Horton, Sarah Beth Carraway, Cally Hudson, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Samantha Taylor and Abby Sugg each earned a straight-set singles win.

"We played well in singles once again, but our doubles play left a lot to be desired," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark.

Greene Central (3-4, 1-0 EPC) is the guest of Edenton Holmes on Monday.

PRINCETON -- Princeton's Danielle Mitchell served on 12 points and had five kills as the Bulldogs defeated Union, 25-16, 25-10 on Wednesday at home.

Ashley Braswell added 12 service points and three kills for Princeton (4-0), while Kalina Yutzy served on eight points and had two kills.

sweeps Pamlico

LaGRANGE -- Nicole Howard served three aces in North Lenoir's 25-12, 25-22 non-conference victory over Pamlico County at Wooten Gymnasium.

The Hawks scored seven points with Shaniqua Thomas on serve and eight points with Talisha Johnson at the line.

North Lenoir (3-3) is the guest of Farmville Central next Tuesday.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Eastern Wayne swept the singles and doubles matches, and handed county rival Southern Wayne a 9-0 defeat at the John Neal Walker Complex on the Mount Olive College campus.

Katie Snell, Karry Brunette, LeeAnna Lancaster, Louise Northington, Hailey Best and Taylor Falcone each seized a pro-set (eight-game) win in singles.

Burnette-Snell, Northington-Lancaster and Falcone-Best each prevailed in doubles.

Greene Central

beats Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock's No. 3 doubles of Kristen Fisher-Ashley Howell provided the team's lone win in an 8-1, non-conference loss against Greene Central.

The Rams received singles victories from Ashley Grant, Grayson Daniel, Casey Perry, Abbey Dail, Dulce Quinarez and Jessica Gray.

Aycock (0-1) entertains Wayne Country Day on Monday.

Greenwood football 26, Mount Olive 12 -- Four players scored touchdowns for the T-Birds in their season-opening win. A.B. Scott, Edward Muldrow and Adam Hobbs each provided a rushing TD. Trey Hill returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown. Muldrow had four quarterback sacks. Seamus Kenney and Robert Aguilar each picked off a Mount Olive pass. Greenwood (1-0, 1-0 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Grantham next Thursday. Mount Olive (0-1, 0-1) is the guest of Norwayne.

Norwayne football 36, Rosewood 6 -- Norwayne won the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I opener for both teams. The Cobras play host to Mount Olive next Thursday. Rosewood (0-1, 0-1) goes to Brogden.

Eastern Wayne soccer 13, Grantham 0 -- Nick Bowden collected four goals and four assists for the Warriors in their season-opening win. Steven Taylor (three goals), Tyler Muelenthaler (two goals), Tyler Brown (two goals) and Ryan Allison (one goal) contributed to the win. Seven players, including Bowden, each had an assist. Eastern Wayne (1-0) travels to Rosewood next Monday, while Brogden is the guest of Grantham.
