The Mount Olive College women's volleyball team puts its two-year and 21-match home winning streak on the line tonight as the Trojans play host to Coker in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference action. Match time is 6:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
Tonight's contest is the 2006 home opener and conference opener for the Trojans.
Mount Olive (1-3 overall, 0-0 CVAC) opened the season this past weekend at the Carson-Newman Invitational in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Trojans posted a 3-0 win over Mars Hill Friday and battled Christian Brothers (Tenn.) to five games Saturday to close out the tournament. All four of the Trojans' opponents entered the tournament at .500 or better.
Junior outside hitter Sam Mitchell leads the Trojan attack in the early going with an average of 3.29 kills per game, which ranks fifth in the CVAC. Freshman outside hitter Alicia Mote is tops among the Trojan newcomers in kills with an average of 2.48 per game.
Mount Olive's two seniors -- right side hitter Anna-Marie Luft and libero Nikki Murphy -- entered the 2006 season with a 79-32 career record and have a chance to be the second consecutive Trojan senior class to reach the 100-win mark.
Luft is averaging 2.57 kills per game and leads the Trojans with a .268 hitting percentage. Murphy ranks fourth in the CVAC in digs with a 4.43 per game average. Mitchell ranks seventh with 4.00 digs per game.
The Trojans posted an 11-0 record at home in 2004 and went 10-0 last season after the former College Hall was renamed Kornegay Arena. Mount Olive hasn't lost on its home floor since falling to St. Andrews November 6, 2003.
