Suns whip Mudcats

ZEBULON -- T.J. Nall pitched six scoreless innings and clinched the Southern League strikeout title as the Jacksonville Suns defeated the Carolina Mudcats 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
Nall (11-7) permitted two hits and fanned five, ending the season with a league-high 155 as the playoff-bound Suns (37-32) evened the final series of the regular season.
Carolina (29-40) managed its only run against the Jacksonville bullpen in the eighth inning without the assistance of a hit. Wesley Wright walked three in the innings, and yielded the run on a groundout by Jose Campusano.
Paul Mildren (10-10) allowed five runs over five innings during his club-tying 28th start of the year. Mildren went winless over his final six starts.
The Suns scored three times against Mildren in the fourth, then added two unearned runs on a fielding error by Rex Rundgren in the fifth. Jimmy Rohan doubled in a run against reliever Kevin Cave in the seventh. Blake DeWitt clubbed his first Double-A homer in the ninth against Chris Mobley.
The Mudcats had two hits in the game, with Ryan Bear doubled to begin the second inning and Rundgren singled in the sixth.
Carolina closes out the 2006 regular season this afternoon at 2 p.m. with Jose Garcia (6-7, 3.40) starting against Ben Kozlowski (3-3, 2.48).
