MOUNT OLIVE -- Alexandra Beshk's goal in the third minute of overtime lifted nationally 14th-ranked Catawba to a 1-0 win over tournament host Mount Olive in the 2006 Women's Soccer Sleep Inn Classic Sunday at Trojan Field. The loss was the first of the year for the Trojans, which battled Catawba to overtime for the second consecutive year.

Mount Olive (4-1-0) withstood three Catawba corner kicks in the first nine minutes of the match before mounting a series of attacks midway through the first half. April Jacobs had an 18-yard shot off a restart in the 19th minute, then had a 16-yard shot off a cross from Kate Painter in the 23rd minute, but Catawba goalkeeper Kathleen Blake made saves on both shots, the second save coming after the ball deflected off a defender.

Jacobs and Painter represented Mount Olive on the All-Tournament, while Beshk and Leigh Telzrow were named to the team for Catawba.

Catawba (3-0-0) nearly scored in the final minute of the half off a high service into the box, but Trojan defender Dani Boyes cleared the ball to keep the match scoreless at halftime. A Catawba counter-attack ignited by a slide tackle in the Indian half almost led to a goal, but McKenzie Burman's 15-yard attempt went outside the right post.

Mount Olive had another scoring opportunity in the 65th minute when Painter lined a shot from just of the box, but Blake came up with the save. Then came a bizarre sequence four minutes later resulting from what was ruled an indirect foul on an off the ball charge by the Catawba goalkeeper.

After the center referee conferred with an assistant referee, Mount Olive was awarded an indirect kick in the center of the box from six yards out, prompting the entire Catawba team to line up on the goal line. The Trojans got two shot attempts, but both were blocked and Catawba was able to clear the ball.

"We didn't execute too well on that play," said Trojan head coach Chris Shaw. "Then again, you don't really practice that play too often."

Catawba threatened in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but Mount Olive fought off a pair of corner kicks without allowing a shot and Trojan goalkeeper Ali O'Steen intercepted two crosses into the box to force overtime, the Trojans' second overtime contest of the season.

The overtime ended quickly as Kim Crowley served the ball to Beshk at the top of the 18, and Beshk lofted the ball into the upper shelf at the 92:34 mark.

in Campbell Invite

BUIES CREEK -- Corey Doub finished 17th of 24 runners in the men's competition and Dani Boyes placed 24th out of 42 runners in the women's competition in the Campbell University Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Buies Creek.

Doub, a sophomore, ran the 5k course in a time of 18:51. Donnie Duggins, placed 19th with a time of 19:35, followed by C.J. Eason in 20th at 20:28. Kevin Acree finished 22nd at 21:31, Josh Marquez was 23rd at 22:34 and Nathan McKee placed 24th at 22:35.

On the women's side, Boyes ran the 4k course in a time of 18:37 in her first collegiate meet. Stephanie Behrend placed 26th at 19:04, while Theresa Thompson was 31st at 20:24 and Krystal Kee placed 33rd at 21:01.
