Lady Trojans improve to 4-0-0

CARY -- Kate Painter and Caitlyn Wright assisted on each other's goals in the first half as Mount Olive remained unbeaten for its best start in school history with a 5-0 win over Southern Virginia in the Sleep Inn Women's Soccer Classic Saturday at SAS Soccer Park in Cary.

The Trojans improved to 4-0-0 and posted their third shutout of the season.

The start of the tournament was pushed back a day and the matches were moved to Cary due to adverse field conditions at Trojan Field caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto.

The Trojans broke the game open with a pair of goals in a span of two minutes as Emily Escolas put in a header off a cross by Painter in the 54th minute and April Jacobs scored on a penalty kick. Jacobs also assisted on Lyndsay Brennan's goal in the 65th minute.

Ali O'Steen recorded two saves for Mount Olive.

Tournament play moves to Trojan Field Sunday as Mount Olive plays host to Catawba at 3 p.m.

CARY -- Durell Johnson's goal in the 86th minute broke a scoreless tie as USC-Aiken defeated Mount Olive 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer Saturday at SAS Soccer Park in Cary.

The match was moved to Cary due to adverse field conditions at Trojan Field caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto.

Trojan goalkeeper Chase Smith recorded four saves, including diving saves on a pair of shots from inside the box midway through the second half, to help keep the match scoreless into the final minutes of the match.

Mount Olive (1-2-0) returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Chowan in a non-conference match at 4 p.m.

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. -- Sam Mitchell and Alicia Mote recorded 12 kills apiece, while Anna-Marie Luft added 11 kills and four blocks to lead Mount Olive to a 32-30, 31-29, 30-25 win over Mars Hill as the Trojans posted a 1-3 mark at the Carson-Newman College Volleyball Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The Trojans concluded play Saturday afternoon, dropping a five-game marathon to Christian Brothers 23-30, 30-19, 28-30, 30-24, 15-10. Mitchell tallied season highs of 16 kills and 24 digs, while Luft finished with 10 kills. Earlier Saturday, Mount Olive fell to Charleston (W. Va.) 30-26, 30-22, 30-19 as Luft, Mitchell and Mote led the Trojans with nine kills apiece.

Mount Olive opened tournament play Friday afternoon with a three-set loss to Lander as Lacey Bartley had a team-high four blocks for the Trojans.

Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday at home against Coker (S.C.) at Coker at 6:30 p.m.
