Eastern Wayne volleyball off to 3-0 start

JACKSONVILLE -- Anna Wilkins provided a team-high 12 kills and Eastern Wayne remained unbeaten in three outings with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 victory over White Oak on Tuesday afternoon.

"We're clicking," said Warriors coach Bruce Burridge. "We're looking sharp right now. Everything is all fitting together. It's nice and fun (to watch)."

Wilkins added three blocks for the Warriors.

Junior Brittanni Billups delivered six kills and two blocks. Carly Boyette and Jordei Osby each contributed five kills and three blocks. Leanna Rothwell recorded two kills.

Brooke Newsome dished out 28 assists.

Eastern Wayne entertains White Oak next Tuesday.

Faith Christian

captures opener

HOOKERTON -- Junior setters Renee Provencial and Heather Crumpler combined for 14 assists as Faith Christian defeated Mt. Calvary 25-20, 25-12, 25-16 in a N.C. Christian Schools Association Class 2-A Coastal Region match.

"Our team is improving every year," said Conquerors coach Jamie Conlon. "The last couple of years we've been rebuilding. We expect to have a good year this year."

Provencial, who helped Faith Christian claim the state 2-A softball title last spring, served two aces and collected three digs defensively.

"We appreciate her hard work," said Conlon.

Summer Honeycutt added five kills for the Conquerors.

Alyssa Hill contributed three kills, one ace and three digs. Katlyn Floars recorded two aces and two digs. Sophomore Brooke Anderson chipped in one ace, two digs and one block.

Faith Christian (1-0, 1-0 NCCSA) welcomes Falls Road Baptist next Tuesday.

Hawks pull out

five-set thriller

LaGRANGE -- Senior outside hitter Brittany Sanders pounded out 11 kills and North Lenoir escaped archrival South Lenoir 25-16, 23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 17-15 on Tuesday evening at Wooten Gymnasium.

Marissa Lynch added six service aces and four kills for the Hawks. Taylor Sutton (three aces) turned in a solid net game with five kills and six blocks.

Anna Kennedy notched eight aces and five kills.

North Lenoir (2-0) plays host to county rival Kinston today.

Bulldogs dump

Midway in three

PRINCETON -- Princeton remained perfect in four outings with a 25-8, 25-16, 25-16 victory over Midway on Tuesday afternoon.

Brittany Davis dished out 20 assists for the Bulldogs.

Stephanie Daughtry provided 11 kills, four digs and one service ace. Cynthia Peedin contributed nine kills, while Sarah Gibbs recorded six kills.

Kortnie Yutzy played a solid floor game with five aces, two kills and nine digs.

Princeton plays host to Bunn today.

Rosewood beats

Goldsboro High

Senior middle hitter Courtney Hill collected a match-high 10 kills and served six aces in Rosewood's 25-6, 25-22, 26-24, 25-6 victory over Goldsboro on Tuesday afternoon.

Roxie Phillips added eight aces, nine assists and two kills for the Eagles. Aubrey Reinhard contributed one ace, 11 assists and four kills. Kasie Braswell chipped in with seven kills.

Chandra Meadow delivered five aces.

A trio of seniors emerge Goldsboro's top offensive performers in the non-conference affair. Tiffany Burden registered four assists, three kills and three blocks. Camille Early contributed three assists and one kill. Lavenia Lipford added an assist and a block.

"The rest of the team hustled and played well," said first-year Goldsboro coach Rhet Potter. "They played the best I've seen them play yet."

Rosewood (3-0) entertains Union on Thursday, while Goldsboro (0-4) is the guest of James Kenan.

Eagles blast

Johnston Christian

Bradley Yelverton collected two goals as Wayne Christian blitzed Johnston Christian 8-0 in a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

Andrew Radford, Matt Davis, Taylor Gardner, Matt Rouse, Hayden Gardner and Jimmy Foss each contributed one goal for the Eagles.

"We had a pretty decent offensive game and our defense played decent," said Wayne Christian coach Daryl Anderson.

The Eagles (4-3-1) improved to 2-0-1 against CCC opposition.

Chargers ease

past Parrott

Five players scored at least one goal each in Wayne Country Day's 5-3, non-conference victory against Arendell-Parrott Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Joseph Cha, Cameron Strickland, Sam Steed, David Wilson and Cameron Ford each punched in a goal for the Chargers.

"We moved the ball around and played a lot of possession futbol," said first-year WCDS coach Paul Estrada. "Our counter-attacking was superb and their defense was hard pressed to keep up."

Estrada said Travis Davis played well on defense and lauded the effort of keeper Ryan Ford, who notched seven saves.

Parrott converted three penalty kicks.

Wayne Country Day (3-1) is the guest of Southern Wayne today.

CLAYTON -- Senior Raychel Batts returned to the singles scene and lost one game in Charles B. Aycock's 7-1, non-conference victory over Clayton on Tuesday afternoon.

Batts rolled past the Comets' Becky Wiedmann 6-1, 6-0 en route to her first win of the season. Third-seeded Lizzie Sodoma, fourth-seeded Emilee Quinn, fifth-seeded Kristen Bennett and sixth-seeded Courtney Bennett each triumphed in straight sets.

Quinn did not lose a game.

The Golden Falcon duos of Kara Kelly-Lauren Pierce and Mallory Strickland-Jessica Davis each won in doubles.

Eastern Wayne collected victories in five of six singles matches and turned back New Bern 8-1 on a humid Tuesday afternoon at Wayne Community College.

Mollie Musgrave, Lindsey Frederick, Nicole Fine, Elizabeth Borden and Emily Worthington each seized a singles win. Borden and Worthington each pulled out a third-set tiebreaker.

The Warriors swept the doubles.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Southern Wayne emerged victorious in every contested match -- singles and doubles -- in a 9-0, season-opening conquest of county rival Spring Creek on Tuesday afternoon.

Saints sophomore Tara Hirsch, a returning state qualifier, stopped the Gators' Jamie Johnson 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 slot. Teammates Katlyn Thornton, April Tucker, Amber Bowden, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox each picked up a straight-set singles win.

Bowden, Lofton and Cox didn't lose a game.

The Saints (1-0) travel to Rosewood today, while the Gators (0-1) are the guest of East Duplin.

upends Gryphons

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central dealt Rocky Mount a 6-3 loss on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Tuesday afternoon and avenged an opening-week loss against the Gryphons.

"This group is really starting to come around," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "We got another great performance from our seniors, but it was our freshmen who made the difference today with their singles and doubles play."

Freshmen Samantha Taylor and Abby Sugg, seeded No. 5 and 6 respectively, each picked up a straight-set victory in singles. Sugg teamed with Elizabeth McLawhorn for a 9-7 conquest of Rocky Mount's Hannah Becilla-Margaret Arroyo at No. 3 doubles.

"Abby played outstanding tennis in singles and doubles," said Clark. "She was very patient in singles and did an excellent job of being aggressive at the net in doubles."

Brittany Horton and Sarah Beth Carraway each pulled out a three-set win in singles. Carraway remained unbeaten in five outings, while Horton captured her fourth consecutive win. Horton-Carraway also triumphed at No. 1 doubles.

Greene Central (2-3) travels to Kinston on Thursday.
