The Mount Olive men's soccer team plays the third contest in their season-opening four-match homestand as the Trojans play host to Southern Virginia in a non-conference matchup Wednesday at Trojan Field. Match time is 4 p.m.
Mount Olive (1-1-0) split its two games at the Sleep Inn Classic over the weekend, defeating North Georgia 5-0 Saturday before falling 3-2 Sunday to nationally 14th-ranked Lander.
The Trojans spread out the scoring in the win against North Georgia as five different players scored a goal and five different players recorded an assist. Only senior forward Ryan Adamski tallied both a goal and an assist in the match. Sophomore forward Matt Wallin recorded an assist Saturday and scored a goal Sunday.
Juniors Chase Smith and Chris Roush each played a half in goal to combine for the shutout, marking the third consecutive year the Trojans have posted a shutout in their season opener.
Mount Olive outshot each of its two opponents over the weekend, but the Trojans rally from a two-goal deficit came up short against Lander. Mount Olive limited Lander to only six shots, but three shots found the back of the net.
The Trojans enter Wednesday's contest with a 29-9 shot advantage.
Southern Virginia (1-0-0) opened its season Saturday with a 9-1 win at Pikeville (Ky.). Junior Ben Griffin notched a hat trick and also recorded an assist. Southern Virginia is a full member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and an affiliate member of the NAIA.
Mount Olive concludes its four-match homestand Saturday against USC-Aiken.
