Warrior spikers post 3-1 record at Swansboro Invitational

SWANSBORO -- A 14-hour day ended favorably for Eastern Wayne's volleyball team Saturday.

The Warriors couldn't shake off the long bus ride to Swansboro High and lost their opening-round match to perennial Class 4-A power Wilmington Laney 25-23, 25-15.

"We looked real good," said Eastern Wayne coach Bruce Burridge. "Any time you're competitive with Laney, you're doing something right. (But) we're always shaky that first match and then we get that killer instinct of playing like we don't want to lose."

Eastern Wayne swept Swansboro 25-22, 25-15 and needed three sets to turn back Holly Ridge Dixon 14-25, 25-23, 15-10. Burridge's squad upended South Lenoir 26-24, 25-20 and split sets with East Carteret 22-25 and 25-9.

The Warriors matched East Carteret with overall wins, but settled for third place due to losing one more set than the Mariners. Laney was declared the invitational champion.

Eastern Wayne (4-1) travels to New Bern today and is the guest of perennial 3-A power Jacksonville White Oak on Tuesday.

Chargers fall

to Vikings

Halifax Academy took advantage of Wayne Country Day's hospitality on Friday afternoon and departed with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 non-conference victory.

"The team played and worked really hard, but didn't manage to finish the game," said second-year WCDS coach Juliet Jones.

Jessica Lewis led the Chargers with five kills and two solo blocks. Shelly Sullivan contributed three kills, one service ace and two digs.

Ashley Clark dished out a team-high 13 assists to go along with four aces and two kills. Erin Taylor (1 kill, 1 ace) and Erin Taylor (1 ace) combined for eight digs defensively.

Kayla Flanagan provided three aces and three digs.

Wayne Country Day (2-2) entertains Rocky Mount Academy on Tuesday.

Faith Christian

turns back Eagles

WILSON -- Wayne Christian's Spencer Heath collected the lone goal in a 3-1, non-conference loss against Faith Christian-Rocky Mount during Saturday's Brittany II Showcase at the Burt Gillette Soccer Complex.

Heath scored 10 minutes into the opening half.

"After that, our offense was okay, but not good enough to win the game," said Eagles head coach Daryl Anderson.

Wayne Christian (3-3-1) travels to Johnston Christian on Tuesday.
