Carolina shuts out Lookouts

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- James Brauer pitched six scoreless innings in winning his Double-A debut as Carolina tied a franchise record with its 14th shutout of the season, defeating Chattanooga 7-0 at Bell South Park on Sunday afternoon.

Brauer (1-0) earned the victory on the same day he flew in from Florida, filling the starting need created with Daniel Barone's spot in the rotation being skipped. Brauer met the team at the stadium, fanned two over his six-plus innings, and departed the game one batter into the seventh inning with a cramp in his leg. Barone ran the bases in the sixth, scoring his first professional run on a single by Alejandro DeAza.

Chris Mobley, Matt Yourkin and Kevin Cave combined for the final three innings as the Mudcats matched a club record set in 1991 and tied in 1995.

Jonathan Aceves had a pair of doubles, including a two-runner in the second inning against losing pitcher Eddy Valdez (L, 7-9). The Mudcats (26-37) added two more runs in the sixth, a solo run in the eighth on a single by Lee Mitchell, then Brett Carroll drilled a two-run homer in the ninth against reliever Carlos Guevara.

Jose Campusano reached on an infield hit in the eighth, extending his hitting streak to 10 games, tying the longest of the season by a Mudcat hitter.

With the road win, Carolina's 20th of the season, the Mudcats avoid their worst travel season in club history. Carolina is 20-48 away from Five County Stadium, with the 1998 Mudcats finishing 20-50. The Mudcats have two road games remaining in the regular season.
