MILLERSVILLE, PA. -- Kate Painter scored the game's only goal in the 15th minute and goalkeeper Ali O'Steen made it stand with her first collegiate shutout as Mount Olive defeated Millersville 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The win marked the fourth year in a row the Trojans have posted a shutout in their season opener.
Mount Olive (1-0-0) survived an early flurry as a Millersville shot hit the crossbar in the 14th minute and O'Steen made the first of her eight saves on a shot 13 seconds later.
The Trojans got on the scoreboard less than a minute later as Caitlyn Wright found Painter at midfield and Painter dribbled all the way to goal to give Mount Olive a 1-0 lead at the 14:20 mark.
Painter, a two-time All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference midfielder, is making the transition to forward this year.
"Kate's an outstanding playmaker and this year, I want her more involved in the goal-scoring," said Trojan head coach Chris Shaw. "With her performance in the preseason and today, she's already paying off dividends."
Millersville (0-1-0) outshot Mount Olive 8-4 in the first half, but O'Steen recorded five saves before intermission. The Trojans were outshot 12-7 for the match, but held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the second half.
Mount Olive concludes its weekend Mid-Atlantic trip today as the Trojans travel to Wilmington, Del., to take on Goldey-Beacom in a non-conference match-up. Match time is noon.
