NEWTON GROVE -- Spring Creek punched in a touchdown on the opening kickoff, but Hobbton applied the defensive clamps afterwards and rolled to a 34-6 victory Friday evening.

Senior Josh Wright returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to give the Gators a 6-0 advantage. The Wildcats, of the Class 1-A Super Six Conference, responded with 34 unanswered points to avenge last year's loss in Seven Springs.

The Gators ran just 26 offensive plays compared to 47 for Hobbton.

"When you fumble six times (lose four) and throw an interception, that's like giving it to them without having to punt," said sixth-year Spring Creek coach Roy Whitfield. "They stayed on the field a whole lot more than we did offensively.

"Our defense was on the field quite a bit."

Wright accounted for more than half of Spring Creek's offensive output with 43 yards rushing and 16 yards passing. Emmanuel Hinton, who transfered from Southern Wayne, started at quarterback and accumulated 38 yards of total offense.

Hobbton outgained Spring Creek 391-101.

The Gators (0-2) entertain Midway next Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
