JV football -- Cougars, Saints open season with wins

Dustin Uzzardo threw for 107 yards and accounted for two touchdowns in Goldsboro's season-opening 20-0 victory over county rival Eastern Wayne at Little Big Horn.

Uzzardo scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak in the third quarter and completed the Cougars' scoring with a 16-yard touchdown strike to Enrique Moses in the final period. Uzzardo completed 6 of 11 passes.

Darren Pittman gave the Cougars a 6-0 lead with a 9-yard touchdown scamper in the opening half. Pittman finished with 64 yards rushing, while teammate Tyquan Sprangle racked up a team-leading 68 yards on the ground.

Lamar Hicks paced Goldsboro's defense with 10 tackles. Ivory Harris added seven stops and two assists. Freddie Frazier contributed six tackles and two assists. Pittman had four tackles and four assists.

Johnny Artis and Josh McCoy each provided five tackles and two assists.

Goldsboro (1-0) is the guest of Jones Senior next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

TEACHEY -- Freshman Jabari Dos Santos collected the game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion as Southern Wayne nipped Wallace-Rose Hill 30-29 at Thell B. Overman Field on Thursday evening.

Trailing 29-22 with 2:37 left in regulation, the Saints' James Jones returned a kickoff 55 yards to the Bulldogs' 34-yard line.

Tyler Edwards completed a key first-down pass to Brian Vance to keep the chains moving.

Dos Santos, who rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries, capped the game-clinching drive with a 23-yard touchdown run. His two-point conversion sealed the deal.

Edwards scored twice for the Saints, who let a 22-21 lead slip away in the fourth quarter. Wallace-Rose Hill benefited from a defensive pass interference penalty on fourth down and tallied the go-ahead touchdown two plays later.

Corey Baker added 82 yards on the ground for Southern Wayne.

Marcus Graham paced the Saints' defense with four solo tackles and six assists. Curtis McKinney contributed three solo tackles, nine assists and one sack.

Juan Segura had five solo tackles, two assists and two sacks. Monte Miller and James Jones each recovered a fumble, while Miller recorded a sack.

Southern Wayne (1-0) travels to Wilmington Hoggard next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
