K-Tribe struggle with runners on base

KINSTON -- The K-Tribe left nine men on base as the Frederick Keys blanked Kinston 4-0 on Tuesday night.

With the regular season winding down, 1,562 fans took in Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium, raising the K-Tribe's season attendance total to 103,442. With five home games remaining, the Indians are on pace to draw 112,000 fans -- the most since the 2001 season.

The lone offensive highlight Tuesday for Kinston was Argenis Reyes, who went 4-for-4 at the plate with three singles and a double.

The Keys got all of the runs they needed in the fourth inning when Nolan Reimold hit a solo home run of Kinston starter Scott Lewis.

Lewis (3-3) was the hard-luck loser, going a season high 52/3 innings and giving up just four hits and one earned run.

Craig Anderson (5-1) picked up the win for Frederick, going 52/3 innings, giving up six hits while striking out three.

The K-Tribe will send Mariano Gomez (2-3, 3.80) to the mound against Matt Bruback (2-3, 3.06) at 7 p.m. today for the finale of the three-game series. The K-Tribe will have an off day on Thursday, before finishing up their regular season home schedule with four games against Potomac this Friday through Monday.

Mudcats 5, Smokies 0

ZEBULON -- Daniel Barone pitched eight shutout innings in his premiere Double-A start, leading Carolina to its third consecutive win over first-place Tennessee, with a 5-0 victory before 4,898 fans at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.

Barone retired the first 14 batters he faced before Carlos Gonzalez dumped an opposite-field single near the left field line. Barone fanned five, working to just one three-ball count en route to his eighth combined victory.

Barone (1-0) began the season in Low-A Greensboro, moving to High-A Jupiter, and made one relief appearance with the Mudcats (25-33) back on July 6 before being returned to Jupiter.

Carolina scored three unearned runs in the third inning, largely in part to a bases-loaded two-run single by Jason Hill. The first run scored when Smokies catcher Jamie D'Antona could not secure a throw from shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, attempting to throw out Patrick Arlis scoring. D'Antona, primarily a corner infielder, was catching for just the fifth time this season.

Rex Rundgren singled home a fourth inning run against Clint Goocher (6-6), then Brett Carroll homered against reliever Jonathan Castellanos in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Scott Tyler pitched a shutout ninth inning for Carolina, which knocked the Smokies (32-26) out of first place. Tennessee now trails first-place Huntsville by a half-game with 12 to play in the regular season.

Paul Mildren (10-8, 3.99) starts for Carolina on today against Ross Ohlendorf (8-8, 3.27) at Five County at 7:15 p.m.
