Whisler ends Mudcats' seven-game win streak

ZEBULON -- Wes Whisler personally ended Carolina's seven-game winning streak, throwing eight innings of one-run ball as Birmingham defeated Carolina 9-2 at Five County Stadium on Thursday night.

Whisler (1-1), who earned his 11th victory of the season, but his first at Double-A, stymied the Mudcats (20-27) on five hits, striking out six for the win.

Two Barons (21-25) hit homers including Mark Quinn connecting for a two-run shot in the seventh three innings after Gustavo Molina hit a solo against reliever Manu Olivera.

Trevor Hutchinson (1-4) suffered the loss for Carolina, working 2 2/3 innings, permitting six hits and four runs.

Carolina did not score until a Josh Pressley single in the fifth, then added a ninth inning bases loaded walk to J.C. Muniz to force in the other. Muniz's 10-game hitting streak ended, with an 0-for-3 night. Rex Rundgren had two of Carolina's five hits, while Kevin Randel doubled and scored both of the Mudcats' runs.

Paul Mildren (10-7, 3.88) starts tonight against Birmingham's Lance Broadway (8-7, 2.72) at 7:15 p.m. at Five County.

INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE

Charlotte 8, Durham 7

DURHAM -- Ruben Rivera hit a one-run homer in the eighth inning to lead the Charlotte Knights to an 8-7 victory over the Durham Bulls in an International League game Thursday. Bobby Smith led six Knights with multi-hit games, finishing 2-4 with two runs scored and a home run.

Shawn Riggans had three RBIs and a run for the Bulls, while Joel Guzman opened the batting order for the Bulls with a home run in the second inning.

Juan Salas (1-1) took the loss, allowing the Rivera home run in one inning pitched.
