Wayne County Angels perfect at Hall of Fame

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- The Wayne County Angels 12U finished perfect in pool play and advanced to the single-elimination portion of the 2006 American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational contested on the Cooperstown Dreams Park diamonds.

Wayne County opened the week-long, 96-team invitational with a 4-3 conquest of Chicago (Ill.) Orland Park. The Angels routed their next two opponents -- New Bern (Wis.) Magic and Mountville (Pa.) Indians by scores of 20-1 and 15-3, respectively.

Directed by head coach Roger May, Wayne County continued its phenomenal run in pool play with a 3-0 decision against DCB Dawgs (Fla.) Victories followed against Richmond (Va.) Hanover Heat and Southwest (Ala.) Scorchers.

The Angels concluded pool play with a 9-5 upset of Puget Sound (Wash.).

Wayne County began single-elimination play this morning at 8:30 against an undetermined opponent. May said three wins would put the Angels in the championship game.

"In six of our seven games, we've had complete-game pitching (efforts)," said May, who recently resigned as head baseball coach at Spring Creek.

Maryland is the No. 1 seed with 1.74 runs allowed. Wayne County is one of four undefeated teams left, and one of six teams representing the Old North State.

Cooperstown Dreams Park is located near the Baseball Hall of Fame and Doubleday Field. May said the players from all 96 teams stay on the campus and get an opportunity to bond.

"We got to visit the Hall of Fame, which has been a great experience," said May by telephone Wednesday evening. "To be honest, this will be an experience that none of these kids will ever forget."

But an invitational title will make it even more unforgettable.
