Taylor Zimmerman of State Road and Colleen Estes of Cary emerged the leaders after opening-round play in the Roy Jones-Clarence Rose Junior Golf Classic on Thursday.
Estes fired a 2-over par round of 74 at Walnut Creek Country Club to take the overall lead in the girls' 18U division. Estes leads Wilmington's Kristen Billings by one stroke and Wilson's Amy Otteson by four strokes heading into the final round which will be played at Kinston Country Club today.
Otteson is the reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A Eastern Regional champion.
Zimmerman led the 82-player boys' 18U division with a 5-under par 66 at the 6,400-yard par 71 Kinston Country Club layout. The round was good enough for a one-stroke lead over Morrisville's Tripp Brizendine and two strokes over a twosome of 16-year-olds -- Cary's Lee Bedford and Raleigh's Bo Andrews. Each golfer turned in a superb 3-under par 68.
Five other golfers broke par with one under par rounds of 71 including two from Greenville, Adam Stephenson and Trey Harris. Pikeville's Ryan Campbell leads a group of seven golfers at even par 71.
Wilmington's Boomer Boyd is the leader of the boys' 15U division with a 2-under par 69. Boyd leads Bill Herring of Lillington, who shot a 1-under par 70. Greenville's James Ellis, Pinetops' Shane Floars and Raleigh's Brandon Wright were two strokes back with even-par 71.
Raleigh's Reeves Zaytoun fired a 4-under par round of 68 to lead the boys 13U division by three strokes over Joshua Chandler of Washington. Kernersville's Ty Palmer is another three strokes back at 74. Zaytoun set the course record from the gray tees durinig the practice round with a 10-under par 62.
"I just did not make as many putts today," said the 13-year-old Zaytoun. "I was in good position to make a lot of birdies but the putts did not fall."
Snow Hill's Landon Elmore sits two strokes behind Greensboro's Chandler Upchurch in the nine hole boys 11U division. Upchurch fired a 4-over par round of 40 to lead by two over Elmore and three over Raleigh's Will Minton.
The two-day tournament concludes today. All divisions except for the boys' 13U and 18U will be played at Kinston CC. The 13U and 18U boys will conclude play at Walnut Creek.
The event is co-sponsored by BB&T and Goldsboro Builders Supply.
