Snyder, Henkle are CVAC Women of the Year

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College golfer Lindsey Snyder and tennis player Lucia Henkle both share in the inaugural Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Woman of the Year Award, it was announced Friday by the CVAC office. Both Snyder and Henkle will be considered for 2006 NCAA Woman of the Year honors.

The Woman of the Year Awards Program honors senior female student-athletes and recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and leadership. The NCAA will select 10 finalists from among the Division II conference winners, then narrow that number to three finalists. The NCAA will do the same for winners from Division I and Division III conferences.

Snyder, a senior from Goldsboro, finished her collegiate career as a three-time All-CVAC selection and a two-time All-CVAC Tournament honoree. Snyder, who was a member of the Trojan women's golf team in each of the program's first four years of existence, was named to the All-CVAC First Team in 2004 and 2006, and to the Second Team in 2005. In her final collegiate tournament, Snyder tied for third at the 2006 CVAC Women's Golf Championship.

In the classroom, Snyder graduated with a 3.815 cumulative grade point average with a degree in business administration. At graduation, she received the Mount Olive College Thomas R. Morris Award for Academic Excellence. She was named the Mount Olive Female Scholar Athlete of the Year in both her junior and senior years and she was a two-time CVAC All-Academic honoree.

Snyder served as chair of the Mount Olive College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was vice-president of the CVAC SAAC. She was also involved with the CVAC as a member of the conference's sportsmanship task force. In addition, Snyder served as a college marshal and as a student mentor. Off-campus, she has spent this year as an instructor for the American Red Cross.

Henkle, a senior from Guatemala City, Guatemala, was named to the All-CVAC Women's Tennis First Team in each of her four years at Mount Olive. She was the 2003 CVAC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Year and was named CVAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year in 2005. Henkle was undefeated at No. 1 singles in conference play during her junior year and posted a 19-1 record in the conference during her final two seasons. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2005 CVAC Tournament.

In addition to her athletics accomplishments at Mount Olive, Henkle has also competed at the international level. She was a four-year member of the Guatemala Women's Tennis National Team and represented her country in the Federation Cup.

Henkle has compiled a cumulative 3.527 grade point average majoring in business management. She earned women's tennis second team honors this year as an Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar. Henkle was named to the President's List in Spring 2006 after posting a perfect 4.00 GPA. She was a CVAC All-Academic selection in both her junior and senior years. Henkle has been an active member of the Mount Olive College International Club. She will earn her bachelor of science degree in December.

"It is a wonderful honor for Lindsey and Lucia to be named the CVAC Woman of the Year winners," said Mount Olive Director of Athletics Jeff Eisen. "They are both deserving of this recognition, having excelled athletically and academically while representing Mount Olive over the last four years. They are outstanding representatives of our athletics program, the college and the conference."

The 2006 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced Oct. 28 during award ceremonies in Indianapolis.
