Biscuits use 8-run third inning to put away Mudcats

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Montgomery Biscuits used an eight-run third inning to fuel a 12-1 pummeling of the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Biscuits (16-9) sent 14 hitters to the plate against three Carolina (9-16) pitchers. Manu Olivera (3-6) surrendered hits to the first four hitters of the inning, and allowed seven runs over his 21/3 inning start. Chris Mobley entered to allow all six hitters to reach, while Adam Brandenburg was called upon to strand the bases loaded.

Carolina's lone run came in the eighth while trailing 12-0.

J.C. Muniz belted the first pitch from reliever Tony Peguero over the left field wall for his fourth homer of the season.

The Biscuits knocked out 18 hits in the victory, while Carolina had six. Johnny Raburn went 5-for-6 with 3 RBIs, coming up short in a bid to match a Southern League record as he struck out in the seventh inning against Christopher Young. The last Southern League hitter to record six hits in a game was Montgomery's Jace Brewer in 2004.

Carolina finished its 10-game road trip 2-8 and with four straight losses to Montgomery, which claimed the season series 6-4.

The Mudcats return to Five County Stadium to begin an abbreviated five-game homestand on Tuesday against the Huntsville Stars at 7:15 p.m. Paul Mildren (8-7, 3.46) starts against Huntsville's Steve Hammond (2-1, .0.69).
